Jacinda Ardern's is breaking up MPI, and bringing back the Minister of Forestry

It's understood the service will be headquartered in Rotorua - one of the first government departments to ever be based outside the three biggest cities.

New Zealand First MP Shane Jones will be the Minister of Forestry.

My question is will Shane Jones move to Rotorua?

Given that politician like living in upscale cities, and Rotorua crime is pretty outrageous, I'm guessing he'll set up most high-paid jobs in Wellington or Auckland.

It would be refreshing if a politician, in particular a New Zealand First politician, took the high road and committed to growing Rotorua by moving there, but my expectations are low.

As a crown minister most of his work will be done at parliament in Wellington. Why would he move to Rotorua? The top people in the Forestry ministry however could be moved up there. In fact I think it would be good for the regions to move more jobs, especially higher paid ones as it iwll boost the money going to those regions.

wow Rotorua gets a bad rap, i have lived here for 35 odd years and i have never had a reason to feel unsafe no matter where i go in rotorua , never been a victim of crime and most of rotorua is safe. Most of the bad press of Rotorua are from people who havent visited Rotorua in the last few years.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

"Central Rotorua - from Old Taupo Rd down Amohau St, up to Lake Rd in the north and running out to Motutara Golf Course at the Government Gardens - has had 217 assault victims since July 2014.

One part of that, the small block running from Ranolf St to Rangiuru St, north of Queens Dr and south of Lake Rd, had 28 of these."

Makes sense to me. Rotorua is closest to the main radiata forest areas and on the other side of those you have Bay of Plenty with 7.6% unemployment.

This is pure pork barrel politics. As presumably one of the things that the Ministry of primary industries does is rural land use policy. Things like best uses of different land areas. These sorts of things need to be objective. It is unlikely that a forestry ministry would recommend that a land parcel be converted from forestry to something else. Likewise MPI wouldn't recommend that dairy land (for example) be converted to forestry.

We are just going to end up with another govt department engaged in empire building. With overlapping responsibilities with other govt departments. They like this setup as it makes passing the buck easy if something bad happens.

I grew up in Rotorua and attended low decile schools in the 1980s and early 1990s. I found it a pretty nasty place beset by many social problems. Our house was burgled/vandalised several times, ditto my parents' business.

Saw/experienced plenty of violence/intimidation - mostly racially motivated. Also frequently saw the results of domestic violence - although I didn't know the name for it back then.

Maybe it's better now?

I miss the fishing but that's about all.

The top people will have to report to the Minster's office a couple of times per week and may also need to be present at some cabinet meetings.

If it's like the old Ministry of Forestry, there will be 5 levels of management above the mere mortals.

Honestly the minister and board members are never get their hands dirty and perform the work. Most board members belong to at least 5 other boards also.

It's the second level CEO, COO, CXO, CIO, and CFO. that make the real decisions.

I wonder if they'll be in Rotorua? It would have some good affects on the local economy.
