As in all things, New Zealand uncritically follows Australia in granting visas after all to the hate-mongering couple who feel compelled to spew their poison around the world. Apparently it was all just an unfortunate misunderstanding. They weren't banned in Britain after all, or maybe they were, but all of a sudden they are no longer of bad character so should be welcomed to our shores. According to the Ministry of Stuff-ups Immigration, at least.

Fortunately, they still can't find a venue, though Phil Goff is being sued over that, so who knows?

I do believe in free speech. Quite passionately, actually, But I don't believe in inviting vampires in. There is plenty of free speech on the Internet for anyone who wants to root in this muck. We don't have to lend it an air of legitimacy by having it staged in this country from a public podium. These people are not just presenting other ideas. They are dispensing lies and hate in shiny wrappers. I strongly believe the free speech advocates are wrong about this. I am also against censorship and I do not think evil should be shrouded, but it needs to be kept in proportion. I would (reluctantly) accept a debate with these creatures so their lies and hate could be held up to scrutiny on the spot. I do not accept their 'right' to speak unchallenged to an audience of the easily persuaded. They have no rights here. Rights in New Zealand are for New Zealand citizens and residents. They have a right to be assisted offshore with a firm boot up the bum.

People like this do not respect rules of law, etiquette, or tradition. They play the system and try to use its weaknesses against it. Free speech, when abused in this manner, is one such weakness. If they were in charge there would be no free speech. So why should we hand them a gun? This is how things have gone so badly wrong in the past. People need to take the threat posed by these individuals seriously. This is what I believe. Naturally, you are 'free' to disagree.

This is the kind of thing I mean. Horrible people encourage other horrible people to ooze out of the sewage. Who needs this crap?

There was no turnaround. As far as I'm aware all they had to do was apply.

The free speech coalition thing with Brash is sounding pretty horrible at times. Brash saying he does 'not necessarily' agree with the views of the speakers. OMG. Frankly if that coalition thing is not condemning those views with every second breath then it is of dubious provenance.

Bunch of 19th century racist pseudoscience and outright facepalm stupid predjudice and oh you look different hate mongering.

We may as well not have "character" grounds as prerequisite for that type of visa.

What a joke - I heard on the Radio NZ news quoting that they didn't have any history of "inciting violence".

FFS - Southern was involved in protest action in the Mediterranean where they were going to use a protest ship full of alt-right scum, taking the law into their own hands to block rescue boats run by assorted coast guards and MSF - to prevent them from picking up drowning refugees.  More or less murder, against all international rules of the sea, should be a war crime or piracy if they're acting like that in international waters.  Perhaps our folks at immigration services are incapable of using google.

She shouldn't be allowed a visa to enter NZ.

Would the Mayor have made this decision if he thought it would be hugely unpopular but the right thing to do? (I think he is too much of a populist politician to make such a decision.)

I can't speak to that but I see no reason to assume bad faith on his part unless he has demonstrated that in the past.

As for Brash - he jumped on board the "Free Speech above all else" movement - probably because these two scumbags are of course anti-immigrant, but perhaps he hasn't noticed that they're also fascists.  He claimed to "not to have read or watched" these dirty scum.

I note that Don's son has called his father's actions: "a terrible idea and appalling waste of time and money".
I understand his mother was chinese.  I expect Alan Brash has a hell of a lot of a better idea of what's going on than his eccentric, white, privileged father.

Anyway - too late.  The scumbags have been given visas.  A grave mistake.

Can I just check - is it now OK to use derogatory and generally rude terms for those with whose opinions we disagree? I would just like to be clear on that going forward.

Of what relevance is that to my question?

I want to make sure it's now ok to refer to, for example, the Labour Party as "socialist scum" before letting rip, so I'm enquiring whether that sort of thing is now ok here, because it never used to be.

If you seriously make no distinction between people like those and the Labour Party then you don't belong here.

You can try.  I really don't care - do u?  Most of the first world is socialist to some degree.  You do benefit from that - so I guess you're a "beneficiary".

There's a special place in my heart for dirty filthy lying fascist scum, alt-right, white supremacists, bigots whatever. I just call them what they are.

If that hit a nerve with you - I really don't care - do u?

Would it be ok if someone took a photo of everyone attending and posted it on social media?

I mean there's nothing to be ashamed of is there?

There's a right wing, racist group in Wellington that runs a website with some photos of their meetings in public places. All faces are covered. Very brave people.
