Government announces 10,000 new homes for Mt Roskill development:

NZ Herald: The Government has unveiled plans for a massive housing redevelopment in Mt Roskill of 10,000 new homes over 15 years, including 2400 Kiwibuild homes.

The houses will be linked to the planned light rail line, Housing and urban Development Minister Phil Twyford announced this afternoon.

He said the Mt Roskill Development would be over 143ha and would be similar in scale to the Mangere Development

It's good to see they are getting some things lined up and in progress. This will build up the industry required and bring through the security for the apprentices required for this work.

Doing what Sir John and Sir Bill should have done about seven to eight years ago.

Hobsonville Point, anyone? The Axis program has been operating for years.

seriously people want live in places where you can knock on your neighbours window from your bedroom . i mean you tear down 90 houses and build 300 to replace them , it must be cramped.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

No, people don't want to live like that. But that's the reality when you live in a big city that desperately needs to build a lot of houses as efficiently as possible.

Not really. That does describe the crappy urban design and architecture of Auckland city centre in the last 20 years. New development at Hobsonville for instance shows high density can be done without those issues in most cases and a great result.

Well.  This looks remarkably similar to the announcement that National made in March last year.

Of course, at the time, Labour were upset about the sheer amount of preparatory work that the National Government had already completed ahead of their consultation with the community

"So in other words after they've fully developed their plans. That to me is wrong because what they're doing here is not just building houses," Wood said.

"They're actually entirely changing this community and to only then talk to that community after you've developed their plans is wrong."

Combine this with Twyford's trumpeting of his first 18 Kiwibuild houses in National's 2016 McLennan development in Takanini, and we might have to start referring to him as Minister for re-announcing National Party Policies.

This is a re-announcement.  Still a good outcome, but not one the current governemnt deserves credit for.

It isn't a re-announcement as far as I can tell. Labour's numbers include a lot more development. Partial re-announcement I might give you that ; )

Local National party MP was talking about something much smaller:
