Abortion law is about to be reformed. I don't want to aim this thread one way or the other on he issue itself (good luck with that), but does this mean we are about to be invaded by a hoard of American fanatics who always know what is best for everyone because god told them? I sincerely hope not.

On the issue itself, I do not think termination is something that should be taken lightly, but I also do not think women should be relegated to the status of breeding stock. This has to be a matter for informed choice.

Like all medical procedures this should be between the "patient" (and others at the "patients" choice) and their doctor and that is the extent of it. It is not the business of any other persons.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

This will be a fun thread - I can tell.

NZ is already home to an assortment of US so-called Christian evangelical churches, so yep, there's going to be a sh*t-fight from hell.

As for my opinion, I'm 100% in favour of decriminalization - getting it out of the Crimes Act. In comparison, I'm far less enthused about the concept of legalised "assisted suicide", as if that concept becomes an accepted norm, I can see bad things happening (for general welfare of elderly people).

I think the current law is outdated and does need to be made more 2019ish. However, I strongly believe that there needs to be some rules around it other than just getting a pill from a chemist.

Whilst the Doctor will need to sign off on it and I agree it is the womens choice, their do need to be some conditions around it that the Doctor must take into account.

I quite like Option C.

Most women who present at clinics/GP wanting termination aren't "in two minds about the options" - they've already made a rational decision - and aren't after advice / counselling. But as it is, they've got no choice but to put up with what's required by a law, introduced as a compromise to keep the religious right happy.

I saw the options flash up on the tv but don't remember them and don't see them on the 1st page of google?

Personally I think abortion should be decriminalised.

Agree it should be a decision between patient and doctor.

Some anti-abortion person in Auckland should not have a say over a pregnant woman's choice in Gore. It's not like they're going to have to deal with the consequences.

So some religious nutters want to dictate what woman can do. But they don't want to pay for childcare and the other expenses those woman would incur if they were forced to allow the pregnancy to complete. And they also don't want to compensate the government for the taxes that the government won't get due to those woman not working.

Sorry, but calling those religious nutters "right wing" is an insult to right wing values.

Religious lunacy isn't particular to either the left-wing or the right-wing. Some of the more extreme religious types I have worked with in the past had collectivist and redistributionalist economic views that would have put them more in the socialist camp than in any socially or economically right wing party that I can think of.

As for abortion, I fail to see why it's even a matter for the State. If you want one on medical grounds it should be between you and your doctor. If you think your God is telling you it's wrong, then don't have one.

The press will have an easy ride with this one, stoking the "controversy" to get headlines, clicks, and eyeball-driven advertising. It's easy, find someone predictably pro the issue, then find some one predictably anti the issue who thinks they have the right to impose their views, set them up to "debate" it and watch the fur fly. Pitching a pro-abortion activist and Bob McCoskrie against each other on a TV show ought to do it.

The story almost writes itself, no onerous "reporting" required.

Good to hear - after an extremely *painful interview with Guyon Espiner on RNZ yesterday morning, that Bridges position on this is that it should be a conscience vote as far as National MP's go.

*painful, because I don't like Espiner's forced confrontational style, and I don't like Bridge's slow, evasive, apparent reluctance to commit - to anything - until after he's been given the chance to ramble semi-coherently about topics only loosely related to the questions he's being asked. Every single time, hunting for opportunity to score points in a game being played elsewhere. Listening to the pair of them together makes me feel like throwing something at the radio.
