The Sensible Sentencing Trust has been censured by the Privacy Commissioner after wrongly labelling a man as a convicted paedophile on its website.

Mr Edwards said he decided to publicly name the SST to warn the New Zealand public of its "continuously negligent, cavalier, and dangerous approach to privacy".

Now for Family First and all the other loud-mouthed self-appointed guardians of public morality.

That's the very real risk these groups need to be mindful about when crowdsourcing such information.

There has not been any mention from the SST about what measures will be put in place to ensure this sort of incident does not occur again.

Hopefully a civil lawsuit will ensue.

I would think that the SST is not going to make any changes and that is why they haven't said what their action would be.

The PC censure is toothless. It will be the Human Rights Review Tribunal that will hopefully give the poor victim a bit of justice. I hope the Director of Proceedings (the prosecutor at the tribunal) hits the SST for six. Screw SST and all the imbeciles who endlessly bleet on about complex matters like the justice system, over which they have zero understanding.

They have apologised, taken down the photo and taken down the database to double check it.

It seems they put the guys photo in a post about an actual convicted paedophile with a similar name.

This demonstrates the danger of private groups with agendas maintaining this sort of 'register'.

That being the case, I think the SST have subsequently done all they could to rectify the situation they caused.

Edit: Although if they were really sorry they would offer compensation.  'Words are wind'.  It would be amusing if SST get sued and receive a sensible sentence themselves.

Let's hope it is really true that SST is at risk of being wound up if a large penalty is awarded!
