Once infamous as the place where African Americans were enslaved, lynched, blown up in church, beaten by police for peacefully protesting, and just generally discriminated against and treated like sh¡t, Alabama now seems determined to regain its status as the most cringe-worthy state in the USA, and the most backward locality in the entire civilised world.

Until 2003, anyone could marry their 13 year-old cousin there, and many did. One sweaty 74 year-old claimed a wife of 14. Then things got better, at least on the legal front. And now they are worse again. True to its perverted roots, Alabama has not only outlawed abortion in all circumstances, regardless of how the child was conceived, but has even enshrined the rights of rapist fathers! It doesn't matter if you have been imprisoned. It doesn't matter if you have made a child by force. It doesn't even matter if the person you raped was a close relative (to be fair, that has never been much of an issue in Alabama).

No, the state smiles benignly on kissing cousins who conceive, whether one was a willing participant or not. Incestuous rapists, and also those who take it outside the family, can claim full parental rights, and even custody, after they get out of prison. One can only shake one's head in disbelief. But as President Trump would be quick to point out, there are good people on both sides.

The current state of things in Alabama and other states seems very weird to me. One thing struck me though - the state is a democracy.

If those people want to live that way, they can. If they don't, they'll vote in new representatives and change the law.

The states also act as a large internal 'market' if you will. I imagine that new laws like this will make some people will up-sticks and move to another state which is more enlightened.

If employers in the state complain of trouble getting labour, politician might sit up and listen.

I dont know if Alabama people are more likely to move or to applaud the new laws but apparently the new law is unpopular https://www.huffpost.com/entry/alabama-abortion-law-poll_n_5cdee283e4b00e035b8f7452

I see on wikipedia that Alabama had 100 uninterrupted years of democrats as state governors (until the 1980s) so maybe they don't deserve to be dismissed a troglodytes straight away.

At some point in the mid-20th century the Republicans and Democrats effectively flipped sides on many issues. Especially around race relations and similar issues. The late 1970's was probably when it reached the Alabama governor election.

They have a two party FPP system in nearly all US states where other entrants have no good chance to enter. A party's actions on a single issue may not reflect the public's wishes.

That's their 2 problems right there.

As if all positions can be summed up as either / or.

Pffft.

Well you only need to go back 60 years, when George Wallace lost the governorship race to a fellow Democrat who was closely linked to and funded by the KKK.

It's a hell of a choice - do you vote for the candidate who's probably a KKK member, or the one who claims not to be a racist but merely a segregationist - justified by his firm stated belief that white people are superior?

Wallaces alleged comment to an aide:

"...you know why I lost that governor's race? ... I was outniggered by John Patterson. And I'll tell you here and now, I will never be outniggered again"

Following success in 1963, he comments in his inaugural speech:

"In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever."

By the late 70's, Wallace, ever the opportunist / populist, renounces his sins of the past and claims to have "found Jesus".

And here we are.  There's still a KKK and numerous associated supremacist groups, the US has a populist leader who states that he's a "nationalist" and turns a blind eye to white supremacists, but always claiming he's not a racist. The VP's an evangelist, the GOP has managed to manipulate US evangelists to believe that a lying, two-timing dirtbag who slept with porn stars after the birth of his and his third wife's child, admits to sexually assaulting women, is somehow less of a hazard to national morality than "liberals".

Alabama's present actions are no surprise, nor is Trump's response (he doesn't support Alabama's ban, but he's glad as hell to have "the debate" open up, to supplement his gaslighting agenda campaign planning for 2020).  There is no debate, you've got no chance to have a rational debate with an evangelical christian conservative on any issue regarding abortion.  It just opens up what happened in 2016, with hoards of hysterical evangelists screaming lies about how "liberals" want to rip near full-term babies from their mother's wombs and kill them. And the media just reported what they said - without calling them liars.

The official logo of the Alabama Democratic Party, adopted in 1904 and not replaced until 1966, featured an illustration of a crowing rooster and the slogan "White Supremacy, For the Right."

(Snopes / fact check)

(I won't post the logo here, the alt-right and supremacists love the image dearly, as it's something that they throw back at "liberals" as "whataboutism" - when liberals rightly accuse them of being racists).

Interesting.....and sickening equally.

I'm very glad NZ's past relationships between the races never sank quite so low.

The present logo of the Alabama Democrats has a donkey scowling at the observer. That's not surprising as it's one of the most dysfunctional political parties in the USA

http://www.rollcall.com/politics/the-7-most-dysfunctional-state-parties/

Those are the kind of choices people end up with under FPP.

Meanwhile Democrats in some other states are literally pushing to legalise full term abortions. Americans really need to be able and willing to vote for other parties.

Oh absolute bollocks they are.  That's the same fallacious dishonest claim as made by the Republican lunatic fringe in 2016.

The only (near to) full-term abortions being argued for, quite rightly, comes with a very important proviso - and failure to disclose that proviso is an extremely dishonest stunt:

- when there's little or no chance of the baby surviving to full term - or after childbirth - due to serious medical issues.

Republicans opposed to that would force a woman carrying a severely deformed non-viable fetus - but with a heartbeat - to full term, regardless of the deformity, even with a near certainty that the fetus will die - possibly killing the mother.

It's an ignorant, dangerous, cruel delusion being used as a political stunt.

elpenguino: I'm very glad NZ's past relationships between the races never sank quite so low.

Personally I've heard some very bad things said about Maori people over the years. Recently I've learned some of that has a long sad history here.

1959: The New York Times likened Papakura to Arkansas, where African Americans were fighting segregation. They called Papakura 'the Little Rock of New Zealand.'

I didn't say I thought NZ was perfect.

At least Maori were never formally enslaved by Europeans, were formally recognised by the treaty and Maori men were enfranchised before European men Link

OTOH, the land confiscations and wars were terrible injustices.

NZ has come a looonng way but when 50% of your prisoners come from a race which is %15 of the population something is very wrong.

And as every red blooded male in Alabama knows, there's nobody who loves his sister more than her brother or mother more than her son. Literally.
