... giving us a chance to let the incumbents know what we think of their decisions and replace them with capable, competent people.

So I get all excited, like a child who has been given a dollar to go and spend at the lolly shop….. to sadly find that there is only broccoli or brussel sprouts to choose from.

Come to think of it…general elections aren’t much better.

Sometimes local elections produce surprising results. Here in Hawke's Bay we had a cabal of vested interests trying to shove a massive dam project past a compliant regional council that would have had huge taxpayer and environmental consequences, but was designed mainly to benefit the irrigation needs of a handful of farmers at public expense. They nearly got away with it, and they would have, but for an inconvenient election that came along which resulted in nearly all of the old boy dam proponent network being turfed out and replaced by people who actually care about the pubic interest.

Here in Timaru the council built an expensive new swimming pool in a location that nobody wanted.

They all got voted out at the next election.

I saved a list of who voted which way for the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax. It’s going to make voting really easy this time.

I wish a summary of each councilor's votes was available online, so I could do a similar thing. I realise the vote is only part of the picture though, you also need to know why the vote was made.
