It looks like Alan Jones may get a sock put in his unpleasantly foul mouth. A campaign to persuade advertisers away from his programme in the wake of his vicious comments about Jacinda Ardern has had surprising success and his days could well be over. At long last, Australia may be starting to grow up in its attitude towards women. You just can't backhand a female into subservience anymore.

The campaign in Australia is being led by women. So is Me Too in America. Both are achieving quite a lot. The war isn't won but the battle is definitely moving in the right direction.

So if his comments had been addressed towards Justin Trudeau (whose politics are similar to Jacinda Ardern) would they have been any less abhorrent?

They would have still been abhorrent, though people might have reacted a little differently. Domestic abuse is a serious issue that affects women everywhere. Yes, it also affects some men, but women are the main victims by an overwhelming margin. For far too long, women have been 'kept in their place' with threats of violence. This has been normalised in some societies by making jokes about it. Give the little woman a good slap, that will keep her in line yuk yuk.

Historically women have been demeaned and subjugated by physical violence and the threat of it. Women are usually on the receiving end of this because they are usually significantly weaker than the men who abuse them and because of the way society has until now normalised this kind of behaviour.

Jones appears to be one of the old guard types who believes sheilas need to be humiliated and slapped into place. His call to forcibly ram something down the throat of a woman to put her in her place is exceptionally brutal and violent and presents a classic illustration of a thuggish male who believes women are only good for one thing. Male leaders like Trudeau don't usually have to cope with this kind of sh!t throughout their lives so can't really be compared.

Oh, wait, Jones was misunderstood. Well, I guess that makes it all right, then. He didn't really want to push his fist through the mouth of the leader of our sovereign nation. A little backhanding would have satisfied him!

Male violence against women is reprehensible. Images of it, whether in jest or not, are revolting. Jones demeaned and insulted the leader of a friendly nation in the most vile way imaginable. He belongs in jail. Trudeau probably would have flattened him on the spot, and I wish Jacinda had as well.

So your response to words is violence?

I thought Ardern’s actual response was superb. She just ignored him.

You shouldnt judge a whole nation by the dumb comments from one old man. It has been well dealt with by the Aussie politicians, the Aussie media, his employers and now the advertisers.

I'm glad to hear that. I'm sure Julia Gillard will be as well.

Maybe.

Jones' / 2GB's appeal is to a demographic who are disappearing, there's at least some "self-moderation" if he offends advertisers and the station loses revenue, and despite Murdoch's stranglehold, there's still outrage in "mainstream media" when idiots like Jones scream at the sky.

OTOH, on internetland, social media, youtube, there are plenty of slick operators who appeal to a younger demographic of malcontents, pushing discredited concepts such as biological determinism which reinforces misogyny and racism, identitarianism which is pretty much a repeat of aryanism. And then there's an assortment of flavors of religions exerting political influence all over the planet.

Take that step back into the past as appears to be under way, and increased misogyny is guaranteed.

And what is the result if you are right? I prefer not to live in despair. I think there are also signs of change even in Internetland. Big companies like Facebook and Twitter appear to be getting a conscience, or at least the appearance  of one. The rabid extremists are being pushed back into their Usenet snake holes where they have always lurked out of public view. Maybe that is the best that can be hoped for. The problems are not solved, not even a little bit, but the pendulum may be starting to swing back the other way. That is my hope.

Trump and co-conspirators are threatening to prosecute social media companies who "de-platform" right-wing extremists, under the pretext that de-platforming is unconstitutional (1st amendment). They're also suggesting that "antifa" be declared a terrorist organisation. Success with those plans creates a snake-pit with unprecedented global reach.

Facebook and Twitter etc don't have a conscience. They respond when revenue is threatened.

As Trump would say, we will see what happens. The forces of darkness are not the only ones in play.

I think the Antifa thing it is easily solved by rebranding. Insist on calling it the full name: Anti-fascist.
