Astonishing in that the US (well the current US regime) openingly assassinates an Iranian general and admits it!

Imagine if Iran assassinated a US general?

I wonder what our govt will say if anything?

Does the US really think this will change anything in regards to Iran's 'operations'

Don't confuse USA with Trump. There are (still) plenty of capable officials appalled by his instant gratification impulses. But they have to play by the rules of the system unless they are willing to stage another revolution and he happens to be the one in charge at this time. Blame the stupid electoral process for that.

I imagine most governments, including ours, will pussy-foot around the issue. America has enormous economic power, upon which we depend, and the political influence that derives from that. In the real world, that means there isn't a whole lot we can do, except express our disapproval. Life is unfair.

Iran juts bit off more than it can chew - launched missiles at US/COL bases in Iraq.

Sounds like they didn't hit the base NZ troops are stationed at. And initial reports so far suggest no casualties. Lets hope it stays that way, it could provide a chance for things to cool off and de-escalate. The fact that instead of doing a formal release to the press the Whitehouse took to social media to say all is well and promised a full statement in the morning would suggest minimal impact on their forces.

It's an interesting time in the region. I'm based in Dubai, which Iran has identified as a further target if/when the US escalate. We're preparing to be able to leave pretty quickly if things get worse.

Where did you see this? Pretty sure I heard NZ press release on the radio 10pm news saying both not Taji and not where NZ people are.

In the initial reporting indicated three bases were hit, inlcuding Taji. Stuff.co.nz even had it as one of their breaking news banners in the afternoon. The Defense ministry put out a statement it was working to account for all NZ forces stationed there after reports of rockets hitting the base. It wasn't until later on it was confirmed the base was not hit.

Good on you. I am flying via Doha in a few weeks across Iraqi airspace (since the Saudi's don't allow Qatar to use their airspace) so we'll also keep an eye on things.

Initial inaccurate reporting is not uncommon with these sort of events, speculation then reported again as factual aka Chinese whispers

Anyhow seems sanity has prevailed for the time being. Both sides I speculate realise that the current stand down is beneficial for both sides broader regional goals i.e. win win
