I like the idea, but I think it's unique to create a federal holiday so near the first observation, just two days before.

CNBC: Biden signs Juneteenth bill, creating new federal holiday commemorating end of slavery in U.S.

President Joe Biden signed a bill establishing Juneteenth, the date marking the end of slavery in the United States, as a federal holiday.

Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris delivered remarks in the East Room of the White House.

The New York Stock Exchange will not close Friday for Juneteenth this year, but will evaluate a closing markets for the holiday in 2022.

Juneteenth National Independence Day is the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.

...Biden, in what he called “one of the greatest honors” of his presidency, signed the bill two days before Juneteenth itself, which is on June 19 each year.

Compared to us requiring over a year lead in time before implementing Matariki as a public holiday to give businesses time to plan and prepare. I wonder how much disruption this will cause in getting payroll systems up to date and actually ensuring everyone knows about it and employers honour it.

It is something that should have happened a long time ago, but I agree it seems a bit rushed. I guess they do things differently in America.
