'Not my king' protests have been popping up in Britain. Here hardly anyone seems to be mentioning the coronation at all. Does this have any relevance anymore? Personally I have no feelings at all either way about the royal family, though I am mildly annoyed at the disruptions to our usual news programming. I guess my main feeling about it is I will be glad when it is over.

I don't know about people interests, but I feel the NZ Herald publishes more stories about "royals" than BBC and Guardian together. All tabloid-style crap...

Anything that involves the Princess of Wales has my automatic approval.

The old NZ Womens Weekly apparently always saw a boost in sales whenever Royal Family graced the cover.

I did see progress in that Charles has significantly scaled down the size of this.
Could have gone even lower scale, but tourism and tat sellers forcefully put forward their 'economic need'.

Royal Family is a tourism asset to add some pageantry and historical context, but long since dropped the ruling bit.

Is there much difference to the hanging on every event and post of Kim Kardashian in USA ?

Not much of a royalist but they're just part of being British, like cups of tea, the shipping forecast, and the C of E. You don't need to go to church, or even believe it God, but it's reassuring to know they're there.

Fine if they're wanted there. I would rather not have them here.

I don't think I'd stay up to watch his coronation if it's on at a stupid time of the day (ie, early morning), but I would probably watch highlights on the news.

Seems like a number of fairly big musical acts/artists won't be joining in either: https://rollingstoneindia.com/snubbing-the-king-why-dont-big-stars-want-to-perform-at-charles-coronation/

The Royals are good for the UK tourism industry.

Getting rid of them will just be another "Brexist" where reality was ignored in favour of dislike.

I have been there and done that as a tourist.

But what I think is NZs loss is access to the Privy Council, that has over turned a lot of government policy and has even ensured new trials for wrong convicted people go ahead. I was "outside" of the government sphere on influence.

The Queen? Historical. Charles?? Laughable. Have a bit of an interest in Kate and Wills. I like being part of the commonwealth. Wake me up when it's Wills turn.

Better a constitutional monarchy than have to go through the hassle and expense of presidential elections every few years, in my opinion.

Won't be making any effort to watch the coronation, I can understand Charles taking the throne and not standing aside for William, given he has been groomed as the heir apparent his entire life (which would have been the far more popular move), but I don't see whomever is donning the crown having any meaningful impact on my life, nor the lives of the typical NZer.

My only interest is because he is the head of our Government and plays an important part. Without him we would have a President that would cost a lot more and probably be politically motivated. The system actually works. And no, I am no fan of plonker Charlie boy.

I care ..... if it results in a day off. As for the pageantry of the whole show - have you actually looked at the clobber the royals wear? It's actually ridiculous. More medals than a North Korean general. And for what? Having a different 'mummy' to everyone else?

Statements about NZ presidential elections and cost thereof are wide of the mark. Presidents of NZ would be appointed with cross party support in much the same way the GG is now. More of a figurehead president in the vein of Ireland / Germany / Israel than an executive role as per the USA.

Because it's the system that would involve as little constitutional upset as possible. Just call the GG president and cut the monarchy cord.

President signs legislation into effect and opens hospitals. Life goes on.

So that's an opinion, not a fact.

In reality, no one knows how a possible New Zealand republic system would work because there's no legislation for it yet.
