Heard this on the "Rock" today; Became a Federal Hoilday in the name of this remarkable man, is this really how he wanted to be remembered?? Your views please.

First, it's not a "PC sop for blacks" as it was instituted way before the whole PC craze came out, back in 1986.

Second, it's a valid way to remember the man who fought for civil rights in a time (the 60s) where this was a very dangerous thing to do. So dangerous he was assassinated.

To a degree I think there can definitely be inspired ways to remember Martin Luther King, his legacy for example. But celebrating "MLK Day" at the NBA games is arguably not a valid reason. I'm sure this wouldn't be a symbol that Martin Luther King himself would invision.

I'm in America at the moment... and we had NO idea it was a holiday until it was mentioned mid-basketball game by a commentator. Oh well, made the roads less busy...

I'm aware that there are different cultures over there, it's more or less the fact that I don't subscribe to the corporate side of things. It doesn't really benefit people having his name "labelled" like that, he's not a product. That is not what Martin Luther King was about.

It didn't become an "Official" holiday in all states until 2000. Up till then it was Civil Rights day.

Actually, Mauricio is right. It was first celebrated in Jan '86 in 27 states(the other states were obviously the mostly republican voting Southern states). But in 2000 all 50 states started celebrating it

I semi agree with CGCrew on the commercial side of things. Think of all the commercialised holidays in NZ?

- Easter
- Christmas
- Anzac day(after 1pm of course)
- Labour weekend
- Queens birthday weekend
- Waitangi day

All seem to be days of meaning, or meaning in the past (apart from Queens birthday, I'm emphatically against monarchy in general and think we shouldn't celebrate it). But seem to have massive sales. Which while they benefit us the consumers, they seem to diminish the meaning of the said day.

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.
