freitasm: First, it's not a "PC sop for blacks" as it was instituted way before the whole PC craze came out, back in 1986.
Second, it's a valid way to remember the man who fought for civil rights in a time (the 60s) where this was a very dangerous thing to do. So dangerous he was assassinated.

It didn't become an "Official" holiday in all states until 2000. Up till then it was Civil Rights day.
