Hey team GZ,

Just moved into a new office in Newton. Voyager tell me that it'll take a few weeks to do a UFB install, so offered an ASDL connection in the interim. Not sure why not VDSL, but there it is.

However, speeds are running at >5 download, >1 upload. I feel this is a bit rough, even for ADSL, but before I get my whiny pants on, I thought I'd check whether this is par for the course for ADSL...?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Your speeds are in line with your sync rate - so from that perspective there is no problem.

Is the sync rate acceptable for the location? That's not something any of us can answer without knowing the exact location. It does seem on the low side for an semi inner city location, and the most obvious cause of that would be poor internal wiring which is your responsibility.

The address is 30 St Benedict's Street, Newton. It's a place called Site 3. Universal Music are here, as are a bunch of other fairly decent companies... I'm doing a speed test connected directly to the router, which goes straight out of the office to the central hub.

you cant get VDSL as its not a VDSL area i would say you are also exchange connected and you are a long way from that exchange.

your attenuation is 28dB so i wouldnt expect to much in the way of speed either

I sync at 18/2 mbps with 27dB attenuation so you're a bit unlucky with those speeds. Unlikely to be anything you can do, and intensive investigation of your internal copper wiring doesn't seem worthwhile if you're getting UFB in a couple of weeks anyway. At least it's only temporary?

28dB would be unusable for VDSL, but for ADSL2 you should still be able to get 10-15+Mbps with that attenuation.

(and this is backed up by Chorus website - stick your address in there https://www.chorus.co.nz/maps and it says ">10Mbps")

Most likely cause of this is the in-building wiring. You could get it fixed I expect for $150-300 but is it worth it for just a few weeks? (assuming your UFB install is really only a few weeks away -which may or may not be the case)
