I don't do these posts often but I think this is somewhat a good (and amusing) story and also a good way to appreciate good service.

Last night I had an idea to test the Ubiquiti Edgerouter with Voyager IPv6 however this connection is in Nelson, at my parents, in a rural location. If I screwed it up it would mean massive problems for them, and myself.

Well... I got Voyager to activate IPv6 on the connection and pushed my configuration via UNMS and then... It suddenly stopped working, it didn't respond to any commands. I thought CRAP. Checked my configuration and couldn't see anything but also did the smart thing and didn't save it either (just a commit) which means rebooting it will make it load the last known good configuration.

This morning, sent a message to my father saying I had messed up - sent him a photo of the device to reboot and he did. The connection didn't come up.

So Tonight, I spent a few hours instructing my father over the phone how to tether his phone to his laptop so I can get remote access to it and what port on the Edgerouter to plug into - he was sending me photos like this during the whole process to show me what lights were on:

Then instructed him to do a factory reset on the Edgerouter. This was a slow and tedious process but honestly kudos to my father for doing this (he did do well). I had access to a factory reset Edgerouter and also my last known good configuration backed up via UNMS. Applied it to the router, instructed my father to plug it back how it was and ugh... It didn't come online.

I spent the next moment thinking there was a bug in my configuration but after I didn't find anything I decided to call Voyager. Well, their techs had gone home but I do appreciate the guy on the phone trying his best to help out. I was happy to wait until Tomorrow.

I flicked a message to @VygrNetworkMonkey and behold - at 10:30pm at night I got an email from UNMS saying the router is online. Turns out he did something wrong with the IPv6 configuration (yes @BarTender, keep laughing) and got it online again. Told me to do a reboot of the router to ensure it was fine etc.

So first off - I shouldn't have over-complicated things by getting my father to do a factory reset but felt it was necessary to ensure the configuration was fine before calling the ISP but behold, my parents now have IPv6 (not that they'll notice):

So thanks Cliff for going above and beyond here to ensure my parents get back online and thanks for being a great help to the Geekzone community as a whole. You're an absolute champ!

It's path of the course.

InspireNet had to fix a config error at their end for my IPV6 to work.

Every time I restart the router it needs the IPV6 DHCP to be disabled and enabled again. (Would like to know if anyone has a solution - It's a Mikrotik)

Good to hear it's all sorted for you now.

There is a benefit to IPV6 - someone can have a direct connection into any device on the network even if they only have a single IPV4 WAN IP.

Feel sorry for poor @VygrNetworkMonkey It's the worse thing when you realize you accidentally did a wupsy!

I'll forgive him :) he is actually on holiday and still helped out. Now, that is commitment!

This is what I am using it for. Basically got my VPN running over IPv6. Next bit is to have a shared IPv4/6 DNS between sites so when I visit it is like being on my home network.

@MichaelNZ That is incredibly good! My parents are pretty rural and (were) on a Conklin before VDSL so am appreciative they've got a form of high speed internet comparable to 100/20Mbit UFB. I likely screwed up their DLM with resetting everything multiple times too tonight as their routers sync speed has dropped considerably (but I know it'll pick up again).

FWIW I get 35ms on my UFB connection. Cloudflare is currently being re-routed to Sydney but in general I get the NZ Cloudflare node even on their connection.

Nothing like the ol' slip of the keyboard to cause havoc, and a bit of embarrassment :P

Glad it's working now @michaelmurfy and thanks for your kind words!

It's good to hear that such service still exists at NZ ISPs and hasn't been killed off by the acquisitions. Hopefully Seeby doesn't sell Voyager out along the previously trodden path for a while :)

Also shows that Voyager must be a great place to work if their staff are willing to assist even when on holiday :) If it was me in some of my past positions, I'd be like "nah, Im on holiday" :)

Based on my own experience, you won't see the DLM hit until Monday morning. If you get hit, PM me and I will offer you a suggestion what to do next.

The path of that ping is from my rural VDSL connection to Inspire to Voyager and then to your parents.

I did laugh, and will do so again.

Still proves my point that if you didn't move to IPv6 you wouldn't have had this problem. #Justsaying
