Is anyone else experiencing poor speed with Voyager this morning?

Their status page shows no indications of any problems, but I am getting a rather pathetic 30-80Mbs^-1 on Speedtest downloads and YouTube is buffering constantly. I've confirmed all of the ports are running at gigabit speed.

Ordinarily I wouldn't worry and just assume the issue would be fixed soon, but I've been uploading continuously with high CPU load on my router for over a week now. Doesn't seem excessively hot, but I'd rather rule out a local issue without having to switch everything over to the backup.

You say youve been uploading for over a week ? Regardless of heat on the router, reboot it.

No luck with the reboot. Turns out an earlier 'reboot' via the Web interface didn't happen, but SSH did the trick. It's in the rack, so I'd rather not pull the plug.

I'm now more consistently getting around 120Mbs^-1 on multiple Speedtest sites, not the huge variation I was seeing earlier.

Voyager has advised me that it is probably due to overloading, although below what it should be even in such circumstances, and to call back in a few hours if the issue hasn't resolved itself.

Well if you're saturating your upstream your downloads will be slow.

I'd be happy if I could saturate the upstream. Sadly, it's not the case.

The backups were stopped for testing.

Where are you uploading to? Can you pause whatever else is uploading and do a single threaded ftp upload to both that server / that location / an NZ / Australian location? 80Mbps isn't bad if it's single threaded to USA, for example. I upload to S3 AWS USA on my 20Mbps connection and I usually need multiple threads to hit the upload cap.

My primary issue is with downloads, not uploads. I am uploading to Google Drive and can easily send over 100Mbs^-1 most of the time. I have a reduced limit of ~8MBs^-1 as there is a 750GB daily limit on Drive.

It appears downloads are having an effect on downloads, but even without this, downloads are maxing out at around 120Mbs^-1. Normally it would be upwards of 600Mbs^-1 even with the outgoing load. Something is definitely amiss somewhere.

Since threaded downloads? Or total bandwidth? Can you try using FileZilla with 5 threads set up to download say five 500MB files from the same server / area you're having problems with? Does it make a difference if the server is closer - are NZ / Aus downloads faster than USA?

Just started to clear out the seedbox here and its all fine - 10 scp's happening at once and total of about 450 megabit showing on the ethernet - its CPU bound at the other end because its a cheap seedbox but this is normal for it.

Five concurrent downloads from the local FreeBSD FTP mirror gives only marginally better overall speed than a single download download (around 4.5MBs^-1 total).

I get similar results with both multiple and single connection tests via Speedtest. Distance doesn't seem to be a factor as even the local Voyager server is giving poor results.

Interesting. Given everyone else is having no problems you'd have to think it's your hardware, or the way your connection is provisioned.

Are you using ISP supplied router, plugged in via ethernet? If not I'd try that, with one powerful computer (not the one you're using now) plugged directly into the router to do a text.

You read my mind. My next tests were going to be a direct connection to the router, then bypass that and connect directly to the ONT (behind the rack).

I'm using an Edgerouter Lite. Same issue is observed on other hosts on the network. Last time I had an issue of this kind (about 15 years ago), it was due to a faulty switch.

I don't think you can connect directly to the ONT, at least not easily. Try with the ISP supplied router if you have one.
