I went to Briscoes (St Lukes) today. Found a product I liked and headed up to the checkout counter. I was very happy to give them my money - if only they would take it!

The queue!!

I reckon I would have at least a 20 minute wait to get served - at least! The queue was really really long.

I put the item back on the shelf and left, picking up a similar item elsewhere - and cheaper! My time is more valuable than that.

Come on Briscoes... Why spend all that money and effort on (really irritating) advertising to get people into your stores, only to have them to leave empty handed - loosing sale(s) all because of terrible to non existent service?

I really wanted to give you my money! All you had to do was take it!!

Hey come on, give them a break! They don't hold a sale every weekend like some retailers, they obviously aren't used to being that busy........

One thing I have realised since moving here is that NZ retailers are mostly in business to suit their own needs, not those of their customers.

I go to the same Briscoes and it does get very busy depending what time of the day it is. Go early.

I didn't even know they were having a sale - I dropped in there by chance.

They seem to have a sale every second week - at least judging by all the TV advertising I see and letterbox pamphlets I get!

They have been in business a long time, with regular sales, so surely they must know what to expect, and should have processes in place to deal with it.

I disagree, most retailers, indeed those in any business are there to make money, to do that they need to meet their customers needs if they don't people go elsewhere and they close.

Trashing Kiwi retailers because you may have had "bad"experiences is a gross generalization and ill informed (IMHO)

Briscoes have sales every thursday night at the botany branch, not sure if its all their stores.
Very annoying! doesnt matter if they are busy or not, they still take ages to serve you! 9/10 times they will have 7 counters, and only 2 are being used.

+1 on time is valuable!

Briscoes don't have sales. They just sell products with incredibly high mark ups for 26 weeks of the year and the other 26 weeks sell them for the price you'd expect to pay for them.

They were busy, you couldn't be bothered waiting...
It happens.

But if I may...
Instead of posting here, maybe see if they have an on-line presence on Facebook or Twitter and see if you can't give them some feedback there, so they can improve?
I doubt they're monitoring a technology website, so all you're really doing is dissing a business, with a tiny chance for anything positive to come out of it.

My $0.10.

I'm disappointed that you put the stuff back on the shelf.

When I have been to countdown in highbury and they have had huge queues at the checkouts (I dont self checkout after the last hassle I got there from security staff) I have on at least 3 occasions just walked away from a trolly of 15-20 things because it had been 10 mins, about 8-9 people queued at the one or 2 open checkouts and the staff milling around the checkout supervisor area not getting off their arse and opening another one.

If they have to put it all back it will hopefully make them think.

I've had it once I went to a Countdown to find 4 staff hanging around talking, 2 lanes open and quite a few customers. I've personally done the same and never returned. New World is where I go, wait times are normally less than 1min and the service is far better. Personally, I don't mind paying extra for service, I normally avoid Briscoes because their product is of warehouse quality most of the time and it's actually not too cheap even when they're having a "sale" on, sure you can sometimes get cheap sheets but these normally don't last.

And, I don't think this differs between USA, Aus, UK, Germany , or Finland (places I've spent a bit of time).
