Hi guys
As you may know moving to NZ is getting closer and closer so I've started looking at more practical stuff.

I'd like to hear your thoughts about banks and which you prefer. From researches I can conclude that ANZ, although one of the most used banks, seems to be the least popular.

ANZ, BNZ and ASB all make it very easy to open an "overseas arrival" account in London. Kiwibank seems a lot harder.

Westpac is the other major bank.

IMHO they are all much the same, and the major factor in your experience will be the person assigned to your account. I just shifted 3 mortgages to Westpac after ANZ brassed me off by repeatedly failing to follow up on queries (3 staff members in 3 months). My experience with previous Business Banker was awesome but he moved on.

"best" is very subjective choose the one that best suits your needs and if you don't like it change

i'm with westpac, never had any major issue with them
I was with them when they were trustbank -> westpactrust ->westpac
24years. 1 bank. it's more of a money goes in then out relationship rather than mortgage/loans.

have had friends and relatives with plenty of other banks changing every second year...

Not ANZ.

I would go ASB, they seem the most onto it technically. Westpac is ok but their systems seem to have issues and they love to make you go to the branch to sign stuff. Ugh.

I couldn't recommend ASB more. I've been with Westpac in the past and it just felt too professional. ASB is professional but with a friendly touch. Approachable. And they've never stuffed me around.

Edit: Forgot to mention their mobile app. Love it. You can pay people through TradeMe, Facebook and even by a phone number. Makes it so easy to pay back a mate after lunch or something. Just open the app, find their phone number in your contacts, enter amount and it transfers instantly.

Have they fixed paying my phone number now? Last I tried it send them a text and they had to piss about typing their account number into a web page instead of the app handling it nativly to recieve money. Wasted a hell of a lot of time when I tried it last.

How does the phone number xfer work when a friend is not with ASB?

IIRC they send a text to that person. Then the recipient goes to a URL, enters the SMS code and their bank account number and that finishes the transfer. If the recipient is with ASB and they gave their mobile number to ASB when they made their account, it does it automatically.

If the recipient is with ASB and ASB has their mobile registered to their account, it does it automatically yes. I've done this with 4 different people and it worked flawlessly. Non-ASB customers or non-registered mobiles have to go to the site still I believe. But it's not a very painful process.

Ah ok. Probably I had issues because of ASB's inability to deal with the fact that someone may have more than one mobile number. Thats also what annoys me with netcode too.

Anz or Bnz gets my vote, but good in my books

Didn't like westpac nor asb, poor customer service drove me away from both those banks
