If you are going to compare wankels with 4 stroke you need to take into account how many combustion chamber firings per output shaft revolutions. A rotary turns 3 times per rev of the output shaft. So calling them 1300cc or what ever when comparing to 4 strokes is wrong.

Other way around - output 3 revolutions per single complete revolution of the rotor.

For each ignition on a rotor face, one revolution on the output shaft.

Phexx: In terms of the fuel consumption, we owned an rx-8 about 3 years ago. We eventually sold it because it was to expensive to run. It did use a lots of fuel and large amounts of oil as well.

Personally, I don't think they sound bad, certainly not at 9000rpm. They're definitely different to a v8 but everyone to their own I guess.

The RX8 is a low-end sports car, you don't buy one for fuel economy.

TheUngeek: If Mitsi are still here now, I see no reason for Mazda to die. Mitsi were in a far worse state 6-8 years ago. I'm surprised they are still around.

Agree re Mitsi's, take a look at the next car you see belching blue smoke 10 to 1 it'll be a Mitsi.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

I saw a GDI owners club sticker on one. I assume that is a breakdown assistance organization or something.

This is geekzone, even if the readers "don't like the sound", they at least should admire the sheer genius of simplicity that a wankel engine is.

Missus has a nifty little Mazda3, one of the best cars we have ever owned.  Another Mazda will be at the top of the list come replacement time.  Fuel consumption seems pretty good to me, and I don't much care about fussing over 0.05L/100 k's or whatever, because when it comes to the real word the manufacturers stats never measure up, and fuel consumption is not the only consideration.

+1 on the Wankel, ingenious design.

Zoom, Zoom!

what's the fuel consumption like on your missus' 3 ?  Parts expensive ? How is the aircon , freezing ?

In the case of older ones, yes. Mitsubishi seem to have been working quite hard to try and recover their reputation in recent years.

I've always been a fan of Mazda. I think the last few years (probably since 2007), the Mazda 3 design aesthetic hasn't been in the right direction. The whole smiley face thing probably was a bad move.

I read they now have a new designer (the son of the designer of the original RX7).

Engine wise, Mazda are usually thought to be a bit more thirsty... but I don't know if it's enough to be a big issue. I've found reliability to be more of a concern and Mazda are pretty good when it comes to reliability.

We just recently brought a 2008 Mazda Atenza/6 2.5 S/W after a long time looking. I had been looking at diesels in similar sizes but in the end was put off getting a diesel as you a basically looking at a European car with the higher potential for expensive repairs + a government which seems to be almost actively discouraging people from going diesel with the cost of RUC and registration.
Anyway this is the second Mazda we have ever owned. The first was a 323 1.6 4WD hatch which was a disaster from the day we purchased it. So far the 6 has been great. It looks great and is a pleasure to drive. As for being thirsty it is certainly no diesel but it is according to fuelsaver around the middle of the group for mid size 2.5 station wagons and very close to the 2.0's.
I don't see Mazda going anywhere, the first gen 6 was a massive success for them, the second gen has slower sales but still respectable.

Agree.  Mitsi claim to offer 'New Zealands best new car warranty'  5-10 years depending on stuff...
You couldn't be doing that if you couldn't stand behind it.

But this threads about Mazda, and personally if I was buying new now I'd have a Mazda over a Mitsi for all my own reasons.

The 3's and 6's are very good looking imo. The 2nd Gen  6 has a very big steering wheel tho haha.
What was wrong with your 323 ?

oh ps : i heard mazda is actively looking for a partner.

Think we owned the 323 for three years. In that time it ate two CV's and when we sold it it had a third stuffed CV. It had various engine problems mostly involving sensors and electronics. Sensor issue with the center diff lock, power window died while we were on holiday in Auckland the list would go on but it was a long time ago now. In the end I think we had experienced one two-three week period where there was nothing broken/needed doing and that is not because we drove around with things broken just that it broke as often as we could fix it.
