http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-05-15/mazda-leads-japanese-automakers-lower-as-yen-strengthens.html

I don't know about their sales figures (someone feel free to shed a light on this if they have info).

But Ford have all but sold most of it's stake/shares in Mazda in recent years. And with the rising yen and most of Mazda's cars being built in Japan , it's been the japanese car company that has been struggling the most.

So will they be the next GM ?

Will this hamper their R&D ?  (as i don't believe they have any hybrid or electric cars yet).

Should people be concerned in buying new Mazdas ? 5-6 year old mazda3   ...or the new ones with Sky-Activ engines.

Fire away people!

I don't know if it will, or won't

But haven't really been a fan of:
- Their fuel consumption, up till the Skyactiv technology. They are only know within the norm of most other manufacturers with similar engine size. So don't think they can "sell" the Skyactiv to any other companies.
Nissan, Toyota, Ford, Hyundai, and Suzuki all beat them with similar engines/power outputs.
- The looks over the past few years, they seem to resemble a frog.
- Their rotary engines. Just the horrible noise they make. Glad they discontinued them, however it doesn't seem to stop people putting them into old Datsuns, or Bongo wagons!

Where does it say that they are going bankrupt? I think you are reading to much into the story.

In the past have enjoyed rotary ownership, and keen on a RX8 sometime in the future. I have always considered Mazda as a niche and well founded car company, would be sad if its went belly up.

@wmoore : i read a few weeks ago on STuff.nz that Mazda is the only non-profitable Car manufacturer in Japan. And they're thinking of selling their stakes in the local football team and hospital. And also the sales overseas have been steadily declining EXCEPT in North America.

@vinniepeg : can you clarify the fuel consumption part ?  i agree with the rotary part ...and i kinda like the froggy look..(sue me hehehe)   .  I know pple have said mazdas don't have the best fuel consumption. but what do you mean by your statement ?

The skyactiv technology looks pretty good. A 2 litre Skyactive-Gasoline  does around 6.5 l/100  ...city is probably 8 ...which is very good for a 2 litre!

Are the 2 liter in the 2004-2009 mazdas a gas guzzler ?

@oldeyes : What mazdas do you have ? any complaints ?

But yea , i hope they dont go bankrupt. And by bankrupt i don't mean cease to exist...i mean....the General Motors of Japan :)

In terms of the fuel consumption, we owned an rx-8 about 3 years ago. We eventually sold it because it was to expensive to run. It did use a lots of fuel and large amounts of oil as well.

Personally, I don't think they sound bad, certainly not at 9000rpm. They're definitely different to a v8 but everyone to their own I guess.

The older Mazdas especially the MX3s and MX6s had similar configurations to many other cars of the time, but always seemed to use a lot more petrol.

Even the newer 2009 second gen Mazda3s have only caught up to the Fuel consumption of the older model brands, such as an older 2003 Ford Focus 2L, or 2002 Nissan Primera

Good site is www.rightcar.govt.nz, or the Australian less polished version http://www.greenvehicleguide.gov.au/ if you want to compare different models/years.

It basically shows the Mazdas even with SkyActiv, still is a few L per 100km short of comparable cars, and also outputting more pollutants.  I think Mazda still doesn't meet the EU5 requirements, as most other manufacturers Nissan, Suzuki, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, all do

I don't own any, but I quite like that they're trying to make every model 100kg lighter than the preceeding model. Seems a step in the right direction.

No one ran out and got rid of their Saabs when they went down the gurgler last year.

I've got a 91 626 and can get from 100k west of Melbs to Adelaide on $60 (at $1.55/ltr)... 645km

Good little car... Nowhere near as comfy as my old BMW 5 series, but it cost less than $1000 with 6 months rego.

I hope they don't go broke!

Article doesn't say they're going belly-up....

And to complain an RX engine is thirsty seems to lack perspective. If you want to smoke some V8s' then don't expect to do it using less fuel.... it's not really a valid comparison.

Personally I like the Sky-Active approach, and would be tempted if I was looking to change, but I'll keep what I've got few a few tens of thousands of km more.

As for the Ford/Mazda thing.... Kuga and CX-5 seem pretty similar to me (enough for me to think back to the Telstar-626 daze).

If Mitsi are still here now, I see no reason for Mazda to die. Mitsi were in a far worse state 6-8 years ago. I'm surprised they are still around.

Indeed, really annoys me when people complain about fuel consumption of a wankel because comparing it to a reciprocating of a similar displacement, completely ignoring that the wankel is capable of producing more power.  Power doesn't come for free.

This is geekzone, even if the readers "don't like the sound", they at least should admire the sheer genius of simplicity that a wankel engine is.

Missus has a nifty little Mazda3, one of the best cars we have ever owned.  Another Mazda will be at the top of the list come replacement time.  Fuel consumption seems pretty good to me, and I don't much care about fussing over 0.05L/100 k's or whatever, because when it comes to the real word the manufacturers stats never measure up, and fuel consumption is not the only consideration.

+1 on the Wankel, ingenious design.

Zoom, Zoom!
