A lot of our customers have opted for the ability to supress the 2nd receipt. For instance, drive-through operators and airport ticket booths have seen a major reduction in the amount of litter outside the gates. In the past people would just drop the receipt out the window, now the booth operator can ask whether they actually want it.

I think the issue is that nate doesn't want either receipt printed.

I know in a 'stand-alone' environment (no POS integration/interface) I am unaware of a terminal that will suppress both receipts.

IMO not forcing reciepts in retail is insane, as it opens up the "I didnt get a reciept" line when you accuse them of stealing stuff.

Depends on the situation really. I've been accused of stealing a drink from a supermarket which was in my bag when I walked in. I had an EFTPOS receipt, which is worthless in this situation. They even tried to tell me that because the barcode scanned I'd taken it off the shelf (it's fair to say I didn't take that well).

These days, if there's no chance I'll want/need to return it (usually cheap items) I don't want the receipt, it's just something else I have to throw out.

Agreed. An eftpos reciept shows the transaction value only, so it doesn't really prove anything - especially when it's from another store.

The reality is that if you've just purchased something, it's likely the person who served you is going to remember just serving you, and/or there will be a record in their POS system matching your purchase. Even when a receipt is printed, I almost always tell them to throw it away unless it's something of value/I need it for a warranty (in which case it gets photographed and digitally filed)

ajobbins: At Woolworths here in Oz, the self checkouts ask you if you want a receipt, which I thought was a good idea.

These days, there is simply no need to print any receipt at all for the majority of customers. Make it an option sure, but just think how much paper gets wasted each day of these things that go direct to the bin.

That's because when integrated with a POS, the POS can direct the terminal not to print the receipt in the event that the POS will print the transaction receipt onto the regular invoice/receipt (not to mention the fact that Countdown and Woolworths don't actually use a terminal, they use a PINpad and PC-EFTPOS software - in that instance it's ALWAYS the POS system's responsibility to print as the PINpad doesn't even have a printer).

Unrelated, but I just got reminded.

Why do no Countdown stores fix their machines securely to the poles - they ALL wobble around, meaning you need two hands to use them. I put my left hand (with my wallet in it) up to the machine to stabilize it once, while I attempted to swipe my Debit card with my right hand, and the machine took the money out of my PayWave credit card in my wallet. Grrr.

All other stores seem to have their machines firmly attached to something so that one-handed operation is practical.

Agreed, I find it really annoying how they wobble around.

Same here at Countdown. I suspect that it saves a huge amount of paper!

It's not just the waste of paper - I heard that the thermally printed paper receipts are far worse for the environment due to the chemicals and/or process they use to create them. I can't remember where I got that "fact" from (Can anyone confirm or debunk that myth? I might have to look it up again) but since then I always say I don't want the receipt when asked - all the info I need is going to be on my bank/credit card statement anyway.

It would be nice if people could ask for one, rather than the terminal just assume everyone wants one.
