Does paying by Eftpos require a receipt?

I've had to replace the eftpos machine in our cafe with a new one since the last one died. With this, is it possible to turn off the receipt printing function when someone pays by eftpos?

No-one takes the receipt and it just ends up in the bin. I do wonder if it's a requirement by law that the receipt prints out... (I would like to save some trees)

I've been to at least one place, but can't for the life of me remember where, that did the same thing for Customer Receipt as it did for the Retailer's copy (ask whether you want to print or not).

Countdown does it. I believe it's a function of the POS software though rather than the terminal as "receipt required" is one of the parameters you can provide to the terminal in the payment request (though SoftPay on the Verifone terminals will ask if you want to print a customer copy of the receipt, a retailer copy will always print).

You could link it with your POS, set up receipt printing via that, and configure that not to bother printing?

What model terminal is it?

You have to be able to provide one if requested, so make sure if it's turned off that whoever is operating the device knows how to print one if a customer asks.

The EFTPOS Terminal can "Prompt for Customer Receipt" which will allow you to choose whether to print the second receipt. It will depend on the terminal and the software loaded on it which will determine if it can be done and how it can be done.

Interesting - is there any legislation regarding having to provide an audit trail?

Or is that stored digitally?

I've always seen the eftpos receipt (not gst receipt) get printed - even if it is thrown away.

Not sure if its legislated but the Software Specification on the terminal controls the receipt printing aspect. On the older terminals and earlier software specifications there is no option to not print the 2nd receipt. However the latest terminals and software specification allows the option not to print the 2nd receipt. In essence:

> Complete Transaction and Print Receipt
> Prompt for 2nd Receipt
> if yes, print 2nd receipt
> if no, do not print 2nd receipt

Then of course you have the option to print a duplicate of the previous receipt if required. One manufacturers terminals you can go back and enter amount, transaction number etc. to search for a duplicate but its limited based on the fact the terminal only stores a certain number of saved records.

I would say with 99.9% certainty that the terminals we deploy cannot have the receipt turned off completely. It will always print one and some allow the 2nd to be turned off or by-request.

Most if not all terminals will "sense" a paper fault on the thermal printer and decline to process until paper is loaded. Having said that, it will print past the pink stripe (showing end of roll) so only half a receipt will print. In those cases, a new thermal roll is inserted and a 'duplicate-receipt' is printed.

The stuff people are doing with the Paymark Transtrack data is amazing, its one of their most under-rated utilities. Is your terminal integrated or interfaced to your POS system? Based on the customers not wanting their receipt, you should be able to disable it on the terminal and then it'll only squirt out the first receipt.

At Woolworths here in Oz, the self checkouts ask you if you want a receipt, which I thought was a good idea.

These days, there is simply no need to print any receipt at all for the majority of customers. Make it an option sure, but just think how much paper gets wasted each day of these things that go direct to the bin.

They should make it part of the payment process on the customer terminal itself - when you put your card in and it comes up asking for your account and pin, it should also ask if a receipt is required Y/N. Just like an ATM.
