Mine doesn't work any more at Countdown, Shell/Z, or anywhere else I've tried recently. I think my card is just stuffed.

timmmay: My ASB credit card works with Paywave about 10% of the time, I've given up on it. It worked better when it was new. It's had a hard life that card, it's slightly bent in one section from use, and it has to last another 6 months or so. If you ask for a replacement card they give you one with a different number, which can be a pain since credit card numbers are loaded into different websites, replacement cards are the same number with a different expiry date. Maybe changing card numbers is an advantage.

Yeah I've had mine die as well, first one was DOA, second lasted about 6 months and now wont scan.  Very Annoying.

Only place I use mine is in the petrol station, has a success rate of 100% makes me wonder if it is certain terminals not working correctly?

My local BP, same terminal , same card, my ASB visa paywave works sometimes, not others.

This is the same for me, I had a few fails with it in the early days, but it could've been user error as much as anything since I usually go to the same station and terminal.

Most credit cards now have this built in, which you just keep in your wallet. Why deface your iphone. Many newer phones now have NFC built in which would eliminate the need for an external ugly sticker anyway.

xpd: I had issues with mine not working anywhere, so gave up using it.... then found that Countdown (main place I tried using it) was pushing their own CC, and were actively blocking any PayWave except their own cards... theyve since changed this policy and my card works happily at Countdown and a few more places Ive tried previously that were failing. Suspect there was some bug in the system initially which has since been sorted....

Countdown weren't blocking cards, but if you had a Debit card you would have found it couldn't be processed as a NFC transaction (which means it's a credit card transaction), something many retailers enforce.

They do however have random terminals that don't have NFC enabled. These terminals don't invite you to present your card, instead ask you to insert or swipe it.

I pay with large notes at countdown since they won't take paywave on a debit card.

With pay-pass and pay-wave both being owned by respective Credit card companies, I am fairly sure that the merchant agreement specifies that touch transactions can only be used with a "visa or mastercard" transaction.

( if you want to use your cheque account, it will need to be setup as a "visa debit" or the mastercard alternative.)

Or the banks could just be trying to freeload their accounts onto something they haven't paid for....

My Visa Debit works fine at the local Bunnings, still no go at any Countdown I've been in.

Mastercard is hit and miss at Countdown, apparently depending on the model of terminal in use.

I've found this as well - there's nothing comprehensible to 99.99% of people about the distinction between them - even the vendor support people of BP, Countdown and Caltex have all told me that they didn't know why some places took my contactless Amex but others didn't. The most common answer was  'Oh the terminal must have a problem, we get a lot of these calls'.

Now the technology is the same, but some vendors choose to disable accepting either version of it. And don't expect the people behind the counter to have a clue, or the head offices to be intelligently informed either.

You _might_ get some real answers from your respective banks about what major vendors support the technologies, but at the moment every new place I go has about a 50% chance of accepting my Amex contactless payment - and if they don't, there's about a 90% chance they WILL accept it if I insert and use chip/pin.

Cheers - N

coffeebaron: Then there are merchants such as Countdown who display the PayWave sign, but deliberately don't accept all PayWave cards.

Yep, Debit cards. My understanding is they own and operate their own Eftpos switch out of Australia, avoiding merchant fee's as a result, so by forcing you to use their own network, vs. the Visa or Mastercard network for payments where possible makes sense to them financially.

I don't have any problems paying with my ANZ Visa Credit Card using paywave anywhere that has an enabled terminal.

One option may be to put the sticker on the inside of the back phone cover/case? If you have an iPhone 4+, some backs may be easy to remove by two screws and sliding the glass off? Good idea?

Anyone got an anti-paywave sticker. I just want a credit card with chip+pin.

Happy to use NFC with PIN, otherwise I want it disabled or a much lower max amount than $80.

NFC against my current account with an $80 threshold gives me the shivers.

If you get any charges you didn't make just have them reversed. No need to go all tinfoil hat.

Amazed at how many people are stressed over NFC/paywave/etc. The companies cover you the same as they do with any unauthorised transaction.
My main gripe is that it doesn't show on your balance instantly, meh, I paywave everything I can here in Oz... Even the bottleshop has it.
