Aren't the branches ran as franchises? So it's the local guy who takes the biggest hit, and its not his fault.

This came up in an article once on Bloomberg on how two McDonald's opened side by side (not across the road) and this was because one was owned and another was franchised.
Only BK is franchised out completely (or near)
sbiddle: EOV mode allows terminals to store offline transactions. Whether a retailer supports this or not will depend on their merchant agreement. Large retailers such as supermarkets and service stations do, the fact McDonalds don't is really surprising.
It sounds like they ran all their EFTPOS through a single server and something went wrong. There has been some speculation earlier it was a Vodafone issue, but that may just be related to them being a Vodafone customer.

cws82us: I did work for Mcdonalds a few years ago and every night about 3am they had to reset the system and they had no eftpos for 30 mins every night

While Burger King operate a franchise model (ie each country is franchised), all sites in NZ are not individually franchised, and all stores owned by the private equity company that owns the master franchise.
