No problems using eftpos at 9pm in J'ville and wasn't done offline as showed on my bank account straight away.

Little bit of an inside word. Eftpos came back online at 9 pm. It was being doubt with out of Australia and apparently affected other trans-tasman merchants. All up it was down about 12 hours. For some reason even though the system is meant to process chip cards offline (as it has in the past) it would only process standard older style eftpos cards. Made for a painful day.

Funny. I used to work for the McDonald's NewPOS help desk years ago in Melbourne. This would have made for a bad shift.

I did work for Mcdonalds a few years ago and every night about 3am they had to reset the system and they had no eftpos for 30 mins every night

I was hit by the same issue with my biannual trip there. So went next door to the petrol station and purchased some mints and got $40 out in cash. Wasn't a major issue and certainly didn't burn off the rubbish I was just about to put into my body.

Got caught out with this last night. Wanted only 2 frozen cokes though and thankfully had a spare $2 in my wallet.

On the plus side... Atleast the frozen coke machine was working! We got through in record time too because no one had cash. Was brilliant.

Not usually, Im usually using pay pass or paywave now they accept it, but sometimes the drivethru person just sticks the card in the machine and hands it back to you so you have to do account and pin.

This came up in an article once on Bloomberg on how two McDonald's opened side by side (not across the road) and this was because one was owned and another was franchised.

Only BK is franchised out completely (or near)

While Burger King operate a franchise model (ie each country is franchised), all sites in NZ are not individually franchised, and all stores owned by the private equity company that owns the master franchise.

sbiddle: EOV mode allows terminals to store offline transactions. Whether a retailer supports this or not will depend on their merchant agreement. Large retailers such as supermarkets and service stations do, the fact McDonalds don't is really surprising.

It sounds like they ran all their EFTPOS through a single server and something went wrong. There has been some speculation earlier it was a Vodafone issue, but that may just be related to them being a Vodafone customer.

They do have offline mode. But offline mode only stores 100 transactions per pinpad so in Drive Thru, with 2 pin pads, thats only 200 transactions. That won't last long.
I've just left there, but from what it seems, it went down just before the stores would have done their system reset, so I'm guessing when it came up, with a lack of eftpos and the pinpads couldn't login, the offline mode couldn't initialise because if you attempt a re-initialisation in offline mode, and it fails, you also lose offline mode.

Last year I think it was, McD Aus/NZ lost eftpos for like 6 hours and offline mode got brought me about 1 1/2 hours in DT on a night shift before it ran out. That time was due to a aus problem if I remember right. This time was a problem between vodafone and paymark so I've heard. The fact it was down from like 4am til about 9pm is just crazy beyond belief.

Was going to talk to the local eftpos store across the road if it wasn't up by Saturday and hope to get some units in for them. Thank god it came back up :)

Still happens every night although the time seems to vary, Being a night owl and living almost exclusively off takeaways this catches me quite often, It seems to take down their entire POS from what I have seen or perhaps they just decide to cash the till at the same time for my local store and is the sole reason I ever carry cash.

Luckly I'm out of the country on holiday this week so didn't even notice they where down

Correct however I think there are approx 2 NZ stores which are privately owned, One is the one by the airport, The other I cant remember which, Usually can spot them with those "This deal is not available in this store" lines.
