So far so good. Glad that finally can view all account balances in quick view without having to log in.
Also being able to login with a pin is a good idea on mobile, saves trying to type my incredibly hard password

PIN access has been a long time coming - my Credit Union's had it on their mobile for ages. Overall though, I quite like the new app - lots of functionality that wasn't there before with more to come. Very easy to use.

Use the web site directly in a browser then, it's "fully responsive" after all :)

My thoughts after a quick look at it:

Pros:

All accounts in one view
The timeline makes it easy to see all your transactions at once - I have wanted something like that for a while, and it's good that you can filter it to certain accounts only, and by type of transaction, etc.
PIN access for the mobile app
Responsive design

Cons:

So many things missing that you had already in the old app. I don't understand why on earth they'd release it without at least having feature parity with the old one. Given the rate that banks in NZ change things (when I worked on Westpac's core banking systems back in the day they had bi-monthly release windows, and were moving to QUARTERLY releases!!!) I can't see parity coming for probaby 6 months :S

Fully responsive is not really fully responsive. Anyone here used it on a decent sized monitor? in 1920x1080 it doesn't take advantage of the full screen width, and it justifies everything to the left, so you end up with a big blob of white nothing on the right hand side, that is actually pretty distracting....

The Android app is not particularly intuitive to set up, it was difficult to find the "quick access" setup part. I thought it'd be under Profile/Security Settings or somewhere, but nope. There is no obvious place to set it up. It's not til you go to the LOGIN screen that you see a "Quick Access" button in the navigation/tab bar at the bottom (f*^king iOS standard on an ANDROID?!?!? FOR SHAME!). If you tap that you get a prompt to set it up, and THAT has a setup menu on it that you can use later to change things like PIN, accounts in "Quick access" view, whether to allow transfers in quick access view, etc.

The Android App was clearly designed by an iPhone user. Tab bars at the bottom of the screen, and other classic iOS-isms from the middle of last decade. Would have been nice if they got with the play and borrowed from something more modern. Leaning on material design would have been a good start.

Anyway, those are just my initial impressions.

Edit - and before someone asks, no will not be changing it. I use Opera 12 for solid reasons that no other browser covers.

Yep, same here. They don't seem to care about those with Windows phones.

And as for the comment about changing, I have no interest in going to Android or Apple.

What are those reasons? Not suggesting you change, but as a web developer, I'm curious - want to keep as well informed of end-user browser preferences and the reasons for them, as I can. That way I can make fully informed decisions about why I should support or not support each browser.

Not sure I'd want to use a browser that isn't receiving security updates to do my internet banking with, just saying. There are reasons it does not worth with a lot of HTTPS sites.

EDIT: just saw that they are doing the occasional security update where needed.
still personally would prefer a fully current browser for my banking.

It is still crazy from the security point that it does not matter if you use capitals or lowercase letters in the password.
If you have the password like Billygoat345, it accepts every combination like billygoat345, BILLYGOAT345, BiLlYgOaT345 etc.
The new app lacks from several features the old one had, so will have a second look in about 6 months after they managed to implement all the features the old one had.

Eek...Hadn't tried that - I just assumed it was case sensitive. But then, it could be worse...ASB's internet banking WILL NOT LET YOU HAVE A PASSWORD WITH MORE THAN 8 CHARACTERS IN IT!!!!!

I'm surprised that they would release an iOS app that doesn't support touch ID. Good that I don't have to enter a long password every time, but touch ID is so much easier than a pin.

I had no idea this was the case, I think that is really unacceptable.

EDIT: My maths may be wrong, but in your above example that makes the password 512 times less secure.

I got stuck on the Intro part on the browser version for a minute, being unable to close the Intro, then realised it was the CSS not working (x button not loaded), clicking on the upper right corner worked.

There is no Android app. There is also no Windows Phone or iOS app. It's all just a wrapper around a WebView wrapping in the website, which was built using IBM Worklight (PhoneGap based)

Yep, so what's the point? It's packaged in a native app wrapper, as all PhoneGap/Cordova based apps are, so to end users it does appear as though they are using an app. They could still have been designed it using a more modern UI paradigm than the crappy iOS form "style" that they have used.

I should point out that I am in no way surprised at how big a joke that Westpac's IT department are when it comes to mobile in general, and specifically Android. I have first hand experience of Westpac's IT dept, and have heard numerous stories from others since I ceased being involved with them about just how clueless they are with this stuff.

The upcoming Windows 10 phone looks outstanding, almost good enough for me to switch over from Android ... almost. The non-existent apps, like NZ banking for eg, are still a show stopper!
