What is this 'cash' of which you speak? Do people still use it in mercantile exchange? I had thought it superseded long ago by Debit Cards...!

Joking aside, I doubt I use an ATM more than twice a year. In the highly unlikely event I want cash, I just get it from a handy retailer as cash back.

The same $20 note has been gathering dust in my wallet for months and months now.

About time, but I do wonder at the timing of it all. This fee really got up my nose.

Same. They started when there were no account fees, but now many banks charge $5-$10 a month or more......per account.....so drop the ATM fees. It's like paying twice.

Plus....I don't use cash much anymore.....so ATMs are likely not seeing a lot of activity these days. They may go the way of phone boxes.

I use them a lot for Depositing Cash.

I never use them to withdraw cash though.

I've only paid other bank ATM fees for probably the last 4 or so years with ANZ. For the previous 20 or so years I never paid a cent and several of their accounts had this as a feature.

It's essentially an extension of what their parent banks in Australia did recently, where ASB's parent CBA started the ball rolling by dropping the $2 direct charge they imposed on other bank customers using their ATM network, followed closely by ANZ, Westpac, and last but not least NAB (BNZ's parent). The difference is that in Australia, the fee is levied by the ATM operator directly on the account holder, whereas in NZ the fee is levied by the account holder's bank to recover the fee levied on the bank by the ATM operator.

I never use those. I reckon the mafia run them. The only times I've ever had my accounts locked was after using one of those things.

I expect it's because these people, probably the banks' customers, see these banks make lots of profit of them and feel that cash machines should be included as part of a bank's standard services without having to pay extra to use them.

(That's pretty much how I feel.)

It would be a big change if these 3rd party ATMs can also be used without any extra fees. If so, they will appear everywhere. As companies will use them as an alternative to paying bank cash deposit fees.

And the banks would be happy with less cash withdrawals and deposits. As it will make their anti money laundering compliance easier.

I would hate if they did that. In the US you get charged different fees for different machines, usually in high cash areas like bars and casinos the fees will be pretty high.

by the banks running them, they tend to either have a fixed "other bank fee", or no fee at all.

Because you either pay bank fees to have you money in an account, and while you do have money in your account the bank uses it.

Therefore to withdraw my money as payment for them using it, it should be free - regardless of how I do it.

TSB have been lightyears ahead in many respects for a long time. I am not sure whether anything has changed since I switched away from them. but it used to be that every time I called them, a real person would answer the phone within a few rings (no IVRs in this outfit), and that person could literally help with any enquiry - I don't think I was ever 'put through to another department' for anything.

I do remember that their call centre used to close at 5 or 6pm and was only Mon-Fri which was a little annoying - not sure if that has since changed.

I forgot that banks charged to use other banks ATMs, as I have been with the TSB for two decades. Don't even have to pay any ATM fees, as long as I keep $5k in my account.
