Blurtie:

Just to add - in addition to Priority Pass - the platinum Amex also gets you 2 complimentary entries to Amex's centurion lounges in Melb/Syd. Details here.

It was a nice little bonus when I was coming back from Syd earlier this year.

Yep, saw that.

There are two different types of Priority Pass membership available, depending on which card you have.
The more premium one (not the $195 per annum) gives you free and unlimited access to lounges.
The other option gives you two entries and then for any subsequent visits, you pay (like the standard membership from Priority Pass).

Cool, can’t help there (yet at least).
Will most likely apply soon for a card.
Would be nice if I could convince them to waive the credit card fee.
Anyone ever succeeded with this?

I’d just signed up online using the link on the Amex site I think, then signed into the app and was good from there. It’s not automatic through Amex, you need to enrol in priority pass.

They sent a pack out but you can use the app and digital card in that to enter a lounge.

Airpoints platinum card as we collect the status & Airpoints (earn through personal spend and work travel) . Joined in Jan as our current provider stripped back benefits to the point having an Airpoints card with them was worthless.

Yeah we joined Amex last November, have earned significantly more than our previous provider (Westpac platinum)

Exactly why I want to join them as well. ANZ cutting back on the frills, but keeping the credit card fee the same is in my opinion really poor form.
Just a shame that AMEX don’t offer entrance to domestic lounges.

CrashAndBurn:

scottr: Unsure on additional card holder. When I used the pass I could bring in a guest, which didn’t consume an extra visit.

Hopefully you got lucky as not the case for me. Was a delay on charging for the extra guest at 32 USD.

Eep will keep an eye out, nothing yet.

Just remember that AMEX is not accepted everywhere so do your research. Most supermarkets, petrol stations etc do but there are so many online merchants and even little things like fast food places, cafes etc that don’t. It’s real hit and miss.

For this reason I went with cashback for my ANZ credit card and just the standard Airpoints AMEX…

Yep you need to keep a secondary visa/mastercard for the places that don’t accept it. Generally hospo doesn’t accept, same with dairies etc. Have found most online retailers do, as well as big spend places like supermarkets, gull, power, insurance companies etc.

Paying the bill is also not as slick/fast as a card from your bank.

Overall the benefits outweigh the pain-points for us as includes domestic and international travel insurance, lounge access beyond AirNZ, and both cheaper and better earn rate than what we had before.

Anyone who is serious about trying to earn Air NZ Gold/Elite now have both ANZ Platinum AND either the Kiwibank Platinum or AMEX.

ANZ for the 50% bonus status points and KB/AMEX for status points from spend. Holding the ANZ card is enough to be eligible for the bonus, do not need to use card to buy the ticket. Strange quirk...

Note I personally would place no value on priority pass access. You get 2 entrances per year but need to pay for guests, and every man and his dog in the US has priority pass so the lounges are always busy.

If you are after lounge access you're better to put your yearly AMEX or ANZ fee towards a koru membership and be able to use domestic lounges too.
