Ahh, but they used a debit card. That means your own money, not the banks money. Less likely to get the money back.

Looking at Kiwibanks website, their debit cards are provided by visa and all their information bundles both CC and DC together under the same headings.

How many days ago did this happen?
if only in past 24-48 hours I’d say you need to give them that time to investigate and liase with themselves and the cards team

sounds like the bank was onto it / recognised the transactions

as someone else said the app visibility thing was maybe a glitch given they were dealing with just one of the cards linked to that profile.

When did the transactions occur vs when you saw it? (Same day)?
I’m sure it was in their to do list to contact the card holder once the cards team sorted themselves out…

There is a booking.com scam going around where a fake listing accepts a booking then later contact saying they had problems with the card and asking for details again.

In my experience, banks really want you to get Mastercard / Visa debit cards, and are reluctant to give strictly credit cards

My thinking, which my be incorrect, is when money has been stolen from your primary account (like checking) it becomes a "you" problem.

When money has been stolen from Mastercard / Visa, and you refuse to pay, it becomes a Mastercard / Visa problem.

Long story short: if your debit card has a Mastercard / Visa symbol on it, ask for a strictly debit card, even if the bank says "it's free." I've had to insist on a generic debit card, which the bank rep I've dealt with were not happy about.

Usually if a bank is unhappy, it's a sign you made to correct decision. The less happy and slower they are they are, the better your decision.

Mastercard and Visa are just the network brand. The card issuer, your bank, is the one whose money is on the line here, so they should be incentivised to get the money back.

It's been a long time since I've opened a new bank account but they used to just give out an EFTPOS card automatically upon opening a cheque account and a Visa Debit was soemthing you had apply for for and pay a fee etc. Is this no longer the case?

Don’t confuse visa debit with visa credit…

Debit comes off your savings or cheque account
Credit is credit as it always has been

Anyhoo, to avoid confusion I specifically ask for debit card to NOT be MasterCard / Visa.

My experience, the bank was reluctant to do this, but eventually capitulated.

There is no "debit card to NOT be Mastercard/Visa".

A "debit card to NOT be Mastercard/Visa" is an EFTPOS card and that can only be used in EFTPOS machines and ATMs. It can't be used for online purchases as it won't have a credit-card style number.

The banks have seized on Pay Wave as a new way of screwing a percentage out of every transaction. That's why they love Debit cards.

I had some fraud transactions on my kiwibank visa late last year from something, Kiwibank had already identified them and fraud and reimbursed with automatically and sent a letter.

I think you're missing the point.

From Mastercard

"Using a debit Mastercard to manage your finances is more convenient as funds are immediately deducted from your transaction account."

I want a debit card, that can never be used for on-line purchase.

I want a credit card, that is not tied to my checking/saving accounts.

Again if there's fraud, I report it to the fill in the blank and refuse to pay the credit card company. No cahnce of them pulling the fund from my accounts without my express permission.

What bank offers a Credit card that is tied to your checking / savings account?
My experience with Credit cards suggests they are all ways a separate account.

I think the discussion above is referring to a product like this. I agree that it's crazy to think that someone could drain your cheque account as a result of your card number being leaked.

Interestingly the BNZ product linked above seems to be able to be configured so that online purchases are disabled, but Apple Pay still works. I assume that would mean that you can still buy things online from vendors who support Apple Pay? That seems like a good solution.
