I was having a look at this link after I read the this thread on BNZ.... what was eye opening for me was the comment on AMEX being much more widely accepted than in the past.

 

Is that peoples experience?

Yes, in terms of mainstream merchants. most large or national chains accept it. However, for dairies, fish and chip shops, or other smaller retailers, you’ll usually need a debit Visa or Mastercard as a backup.

 

That said, merchants that don’t accept AMEX are typically for lower-value transactions anyway, so I carry a Mastercard as my backup.

 

Once you have an AMEX, you quickly learn which merchants accept it, and I now tend to shop less at those that don’t.
