… It's great, only have to put in (remember) my number, then I approve it in my banking app, so very secure.

What nobody has mentioned yet is that you also don’t have to input CC details. Another win for security. The other bonus is that you can select any account available in your banking portal, you are not limited to the CHQ / SAV / CRD accounts.

I use afterpay or paypal where supported to avoid putting my card details into untrusted sites (basically any site that doesn't push it off site to a legit payment processor is untrusted to me) - benefit with afterpay is that you can then stack all your payments into a single one and use the longer interest free times from gem visa or many of the light credit card products.

Online eftpos is great, safe and have been using it for pbtech via asb for quite awhile

POLI has gone legit via open banking APIs but I think only for the big 4 banks so far: ASB, ANZ, BNZ, Westpac so far.

Needless to say if a form that is not your banks app/site asks for your bank username/password you don't enter it.

Not quite. They’re still screen scraping even with the big banks where they should have open banking agreements with. Be cautious with POLi.

Used it (Online EFTPOS) with ANZ and PBTech many times, no issues. Saves on CC fees for getting deliveries or click and collect.

It's still a bit of a pain having to go into the payments requests menu in the ANZ app. Should really be a push notification but I can see some downsides with that, too.

I think Westpac has done a reasonable implemention. One you initiate the purchase, you go to your Westpa app and it pops immediately an approval screen for the payment you want to make. Choose the account, press OK and that's it. The friction is quite low.

With ASB it's a push notification.

Not going well over at Skinny I see...

⚠️ Please avoid using Westpac bank for Online EFTPOS top-ups on the Skinny app right now.
Use another payment method while we work through an issue with payments not applying automatically. Thank you.

No idea if Skinny use the normal form, but I did notice that when I used OnlineEFTpos over the weekend, selecting Westpac came up with a note that using a mobile number was currently unavailable. Had to use Customer Number instead.

I use it where possible to avoid surcharges, does involve extra steps of opening your banking app, finding the request and approving it however.

You usually have to do that anyway with Mastercard Debit card with Sharesies. Guessing it is going to become more common.

Which banks? For example:

PB Tech > POLI > ASB is legit now (though there is no real reason to use POLI over Online Eftpos for ASB)

A QR code? How does that work when you use Online EFTPOS... from your phone? How are you going to scan the QR code? Utterly stupid.

If any third party service is asking for your username and password then stop and close the page.

I recently used Akahu to transfer money from Simplicity to Kiwibank - Akahu requires your userrname and password. Looking online, Akahu is promoted as supported by Westpac, AMP and others, and is a participant in open banking. However, when checking with my bank, Kiwibank, they advised Akahu is not officially supported by them. So it pays to be vigilant - not all payment systems are treated the same across the banking system.

I think that was referring to Poli, not online EFTPOS.

This from Kiwibank:

Kiwibank is scheduled to join Open Banking on 29 May 2026. This will enable approved third party providers to offer payment services, such as online EFTPOS, through secure integration with Kiwibank accounts.
If PB Tech is using an online EFTPOS solution provided by a trusted and approved Open Banking provider, and that provider has successfully partnered with and been enabled for Kiwibank, then this payment method will be supported for Kiwibank customers.
We recommend confirming with PB Tech which provider they are using for their online EFTPOS service, as availability will depend on that provider being connected and approved within Kiwibank’s Open Banking framework.
