So i discovered PBTech has a payment option called Online EFTPOS

Got to the bit where my bank says "You authorise PBTech to withdraw funds from your account ..."

Froze and got a bit worried ...

Anyone knows any issues with using online ETFPOS (in terms of security) ?

Thanks

Fully supported/backed by banks. Anz have a page dedicated to it.

You are consenting they get your mobile number associated with your bank app. And then approve the payment in the app.

More places should use it rather than nail you credit fees/lose out.

POLI has even jumped on board since being exposed by the looks too.

I've used it with PB/Westpac a few times and it's worked fine. As noted above it's fully supported by the banks.

At least with Westpac you can just log into online banking via your browser as per usual. You don't need an app, and don't need to give out your phone number.

I use it where possible to avoid surcharges, does involve extra steps of opening your banking app, finding the request and approving it however.

Yep, it's using Open banking behind the scenes. One note is do not close the window while you're making the payment in your bank app otherwise the call doesn't get back to the site you're paying.

POLI has even jumped on board since being exposed by the looks too.

Nope. Don't touch POLi:

They're still scraping despite other options being available to them these days via Open Banking and note providing your login details to any third party is a breach of your internet banking terms and conditions and banks don't endorse this at all.

When you accept the Online EFTpos notification in your banking app, most banks I've experienced it with (vague memories of ANZ from years back so can't be 100%), present it as a prefilled, uneditable (except for your reference) bank transfer screen. ASB also make clear that it's a One-Off authorisation, and I think Westpac & BNZ do as well.

BNZ are a little weird when it's the first time using Online EFTpos, they redirect you to the normal login screen to authorise and set it up for future use. That can look a little sketchy, but beyond that first time it's just like the others, enter mobile number & proceed.

Does this mean ASB supports the use of POLi now?

Online Eftpos works seamlessly with ASB. I've made a number of PBtech purchases that way.

Hrm. Here I was thinking this spiel may have been indicating they shifted to requesting. PB use Onelineeftpos and it list Poli as a transport for it too. Just like ASB have.

Been using online EFTPOS for a long time, I think since pretty much it started. I know Mighty Ape, Ascent, and a few others were early adopters. One NZ have this option now too. It's great, only have to put in (remember) my number, then I approve it in my banking app, so very secure.

I use it to pay quic. Have used it on PB in the past, worked fine there too.

Annoying things is that it needs a mobile number filled in, which means I am disclosing contact details with them that I don't want them to have, and also it refuses to accept autofilled ones with +6421 on it.

Really it should allow me to generate an ID in the app to feed to the online eftpos page, or else display a QR that I scan in the app so I am not letting them know what contact number I have with the bank, as its not the one I use in general.

Hmm good point. They should be going via Open Banking but if they're asking for a username and password then this is an indication that Open Banking is not used.

If any third party service is asking for your username and password then stop and close the page which brings me to another point:

The problem is not everyone understands QR codes or anything more complex than entering in a mobile number plus also having a QR will mean banks will need to build this functionality into their app. They're needing to make this accessible to everyone which is why mobile number is used to pair with your account.

What nobody has mentioned yet is that you also don’t have to input CC details. Another win for security. The other bonus is that you can select any account available in your banking portal, you are not limited to the CHQ / SAV / CRD accounts.

Yep, use it all the time for a specific purpose.

somtimes the client application can hang for what seems like forever but it’s only less than 10 seconds.

faster when on wifi.
