Nety: Think we owned the 323 for three years. In that time it ate two CV's and when we sold it it had a third stuffed CV. It had various engine problems mostly involving sensors and electronics. Sensor issue with the center diff lock, power window died while we were on holiday in Auckland the list would go on but it was a long time ago now. In the end I think we had experienced one two-three week period where there was nothing broken/needed doing and that is not because we drove around with things broken just that it broke as often as we could fix it.

I'm not necessarily suggesting it's true in your case, but I'm always reluctant to read too much into "I'm never going to buy another Mazda/Mitsubishi/whatever" because often the lemons are often used imports with no detailed service history. It seems unfair to blame the manufacturer if you can't be sure that the vehicle was used and maintained according to the manufacturer's specifications.

You will note that not only have I not said "do not buy" but in fact the reason I posted was because we bought another Mazda. I posted what went wrong with it because I was asked.
I was just about to say that the reason we did not have one in between years when I remembered that in fact we did. A 626 saloon which we did not have for long. Not because of any issue with the car but because my wife started home based child care and we switched to a people mover so she could fit all the kids in.
I agree that one bad car does not make a bad manufacturer or even a bad model, in our case I knew other people with similar 323's that did not have any issues with them.

floydbloke: And then there are these:
Yes it's a Mazda

Wow - well spotted - I heard about them back in the day.
Surprised that any made it out here.
Quite a rarity. Looks like they were quite a turkey though.
More gutless than the V8 holden engine and much more thirsty - add in horribly expensive.

Just read that Mazda are researching entering V8 supercars. I'll be amazed if they do

I wouldn't mind one of these when they are available.

I hope Mazda don't go away. I doubt they will Nissan has been on the verge of bankruptcy for years but with help from Renault they have comeback.

I agree with the non sky active engines being thirsty. I was surprised to see that the Mazda 3 used more fuel then my 14 year old 2lt turbo Nissan.

Actually not as scary as it first seems!
It reads to me as FIAT bankrolling the development and in return using the chassis for an Alfa model. There will be no FIAT in the Mazda
