had my card sucked up by ATM yesterday. Same story when I contacted BNZ last night. I had an older EFTPOS card with a magnetic strip - I had always chosen to keep my credit/debit card separate from the EFTPOS card in the mistaken belief that I'd be better protected against this - at-least my other cards are OK for now. Yeah this most certainly is impacting multiple banks here in NZ. I'm Auckland based so there is a pattern here .. very worrying.

sonyxperiageek: I wonder if PayWave can be "skimmed"?

The suggestion is you can do man in the middle with a couple of NFC capable phones.

Card itself isn't copied but they make a transaction off your card without you knowing.

The fact is that if any such man in the middle attacks has been made the banks + Visa + Mastercard wouldn't admit it.

Some of the threads in the project discussion area terrify me.  Questions like "can I use this as a 'skimmer' without having to intercept a transaction?", I'm surprised the police aren't involved yet, and that DICE haven't removed the project.

NFC proxy can't deal with DDA. One transaction and your card gets blocked.

sbiddle: Word on the street is a massive compromise involving all banks. It'll be very interesting to see where this goes in two to three weeks time when somebody in the media finally picks up on it...

Funny you mention that... @ANZ_AU tweeted today all ATMs will be offline next tuesday between midnight and 6am....

It's just maintenance.  Westpac NZ is taking their ATM network and online banking offline from 2am to 5am tomorrow morning as well.

Just an update, money has been refunded. New cards should hopefully arrive Monday. Pleased with the turnaround! I still reckon the transactions should have been caught by the fraud protection though...

Me and my partner both got skimmed after we used our Kiwibank cards at the Westpac ATM in Richmond Road Countdown before Eminem on Saturday. She had her money taken from UK on Tuesday, I had mine taken from Indian on Wednesday.

Crazy stuff! Making sure I cover my hand now when ever I use an ATM (I hardly do anyway)

richms: I've had my chip card not work in a few dodgey places recently and the machine request a swipe. Always seemed dodgey. One was maccas at wairau in the drive thru. Another was bok mart in Mt eden and another was the Kwik e mart at auckland hospital.

Since my debit cards magnetic stripe is unreadable I ended paying with money rather than using my barely working old yellow swipe only eftpos card.

I was cleaned out last week with this scam. It was my asb eftpos card that I only use for day to day coffees etc. I have never used it in an atm however I have used it a few times at kwik e mart at auckland hospital! Any1 else? I wonder if this could be the place?

Left or right counter at the Kwik e mart? The right was the one that wouldn't work the chip for me and my debit card had no mag strip on it that will read.

I have used both? Have you just been there once? We could compare dates?
I also know of 1 other who works in the hospital that it has happened to and she has been to kwik e mart on several occasions as well.

The nice coffee place also has a whacky machine that is swipe only which I have used my eftpos card in. Did you go to that? Center till only. I've not been told I have been affected but I will usually use cash rather than the mag stripe card.

Yes I go to that daily. So have you not had your card skimmed and money taken?

No but I don't really keep money in the account the card can get to for very long. I'm assuming asb would pick up on something dodgey if was tried.

It's just those are 2 places I have been recently woth machines acting dodgey. Also bok mart in Mt eden was insisting on a swipe for a while.

Oh it may not be related then. I use my card most days in the hospital and not many other places.
I hope we find out where it happened.
Bank were really good and froze my account however they had cleard it out in an hour.
Bank gave all my money back very quickly.
