rayonline: Sbiddle can you elaborate. If one booked in advanced when the travel time is so low season could they get that booking class for free?

Airlines work by having fare buckets/booking classes on a flight. On domestic flights these are P,K,X,G,S,L,T,W,V,Q,H,M,B,Y with each booking class having a fixed price associated with it on the fare matrix and an associated fare basis code which determines whether it's seat, seat+bag, flexi time or flexi plus.

A certain number of seats will be made available on a flight for each class, but not all classes will be available on every flight or for purchase in all countries even if they're on 086 NZ ticket stock. Amex free flight availability will be booked into a specific class, so if that booking class is not available you're not going to be able to book it.

Yep thanks for that - not on all routes. I know a small about booking classes ie diff booking classes accrue APD (and how many points), and others don't get points at all.

I guess one could get AKL to WGN a bit more easier :)

Defeats the purpose but if you are really determined and you call in every 3 days of a low season month, could you get a Queenstown fare that says depart within a week.

I've just signed up for this - $395/p.a, incl's. one free domestic flight, OK might not get the dates you need but consider it as a bonus, the thing that attracted me was the welcome bonus $800 of AirNZ Airpoint dollars pending spend of $2k in first three months which shouldn't be too hard, even just buying vouchers for New World to top-up if need be. Supplementary card is at no additional charge. The only issue I've had with Amex in the past is that some retailers don't accept, we also have Westpac's platinum mastercard ($125p.a) which gives hotpoints we redeem for store vouchers and tend to use on planned purchases anyway, buying on sale, so better than their product rewards.

Worth checking out the Amex AirNZ platinum card, the offer of the $800 bonus airpoints applies until Feb 2nd from memory.

That card is on my radar but I am already a amex customer so I cannot ge that promotion until I have cancel their card(s) for a period of 12 months. The $800 APD is pretty good, in the past used to be $400 or so .. I have the free card now.

While some stores don't support it. Not really an issue, pple still use EFTPOS. Or a fee less CC. Like the Amex free or Kiwibank Zero MC. My only issue with the $395 card is after the first year (no fee), I really cannot reason for myself. To breakeven the $395 annual fee you would need to spend close to $35,000 PA. After the first year the $800APD is gone. I for one don't run my own business. If I had that much money I rather invest it than "spend" it.

IME I come across more stores that don't accept any CC at all than we will accept only VISA / MC. Esp smaller / non chain stores for weekday lunches.

If I did spend that much, I may apply and see if they accept me - Westpac Black World Card which gives free lounge access (Priority Pass) - not Koru Club and a slightly better 1.4 or 1.5% in collecting APD.

Sure, I don't imagine I'll be renewing after the 12 months unless offering or membership fee changes, but that $800 AP$ makes it a no-brainer for anyone figuring to travel with AirNZ this year - actually I didn't read what the expiry was for the AP$'s, but we're planning on using them.
