IlDuce: On the subject of bad driving behaviour, Anyone had a letter in mail from police, or know anyone who has received one like this:

(note a friend of mine got one, he did not show me the letter, and he was a bit hazy recalling verbatim its precise wording)

"On xx of Feb 2010 (around 6/7 weeks prior to him getting the letter), you were observed not stopping for amber light on intersection of x and x streets at x.xxpm. You now have xx days to write to us explaining why you did not stop, or you could get up to a $10,000 fine...".

Well I guess that answered why I would regularly see an officer with no car, but holding a clipboard just lurking around various places, must be compiling a list of naughty people. But to me the whole thing seems silly, would anyone seriously remember going through an amber light, or any other similar thing, 6 weeks after its happened? I would drive through 100+ sets of traffic lights a day, which would be 4200+ sets of lights since the 1 time I got seen if I were to get a ticket. No way my brain could log all those insignificant events.

Whats the point in this letter, can anyone tell me? If he has been observed, why not send a ticket instead? To me asking for an excuse is pointless as one would not recall that specific event, and the only excuse could be something generic, or just an outright lie as an excuse.

It means someone complained and they don't have concrete evidence so are basically waiting for you to pay (which means a confession), deny it of course. Obviously if they had solid evidence you would have been given an infringement notice immdediately.

We all speed. NO one cannot say they never did. Every one have and had been speeding. even 1 km over is called speeding. i hear that cops given tickets out for poeple going just one km over

The thing that is wrong is people deliberately speeding.

I sit on the speed limit (some times a little over/a little under) but always within 5k's. But this is normal, it is too hard to go exactly on the speed limit and people will get fustrated if you go under it so i think it is the best option.

Others happily go within 10k's+ over, which is wrong. Its intentionally speeding. This is going much faster than is intended and causes unneeded danger to others.

The Police don't seem really motivated to deal with RED light runners, are you sure it was about a yellow light where there is the defence that you were too close to stop safely?

HUH police

there is no defence of too close to stop safely.
I was going at 50 on a wet day and the darn light turned yellow when i was at the line. I said there's no way i could've stopped. Said that in writing. Told to p*&^ off in reply letter. I wonder if i slammed the brakes and a cop hits me from the back what would happen? I'd still be ticketed for some silly reason probably. It's a business (of saving lives).

No laws in nz about moving to the left and only in passing lanes is it suggested.
Though most of would like slower traffic to move to the left on multi lane roads or highways there is always someone determined to go slower than everone and stick it out in the right line and give you the finger if you dare use the horn!

It is just part of the beauty of NZ, no laws to stop passing on the left on motorways etc..sigh., no wonder we have problems with internet management also ;P

Perhaps it's not law, but it is sensible ... I think a lot that is missing from NZ driving is courtesy.

Who would complain about someone going through an orange light? There is no reason I can see for anyone to ever want to do that. The only scenario I can think of that could result in an accident from going through an orange would be to crash into a car stopping inside an intersection who is trying to turn right.

If it was a private complaint, then what are the police doing standing around with clipboards here and there watching traffic?

To answer previous question it was amber, not red. Since I have told my other friends/work colleagues about it (as I can't believe he got the letter, and so long after the incident), it seems a few have copped orange light tickets. Maybe the police are idle here, but orange lights and 2 lane turning are the two areas they target, which I think are unfair, as there are many excuses for them, whereas by comparison, a stop sign there is none - and there are plenty of places I can think of where I have observed traffic, and I would say only 10% maximum of cars come to complete stop, so if they focussed on that they could issues tens of thousands of dollars in tickets a day, with no airy fairy letters asking for an excuse.

The same thing happened to me and I got off with a warning. You have to go about it the right way, I guess. No use just saying it was raining and the road was wet so I couldn't stop in time, you should've been driving to the conditions. Did you take it to court?

I have found more out now. Their response to "the excuse" letter, was an instant fine. It turns out there are multiple cameras on the lights. They have offered for him to go view the footage. He is going to take it to court.

Now I know of 3 others who have also been issued tickets this week for same lights, going through orange. When I lived in Christchurch, they had red light cameras, which were clearly marked. So beware if passing through Timaru on the main road as we have unmarked orange light cameras.

Aahhhh, here it is... must be dash mounted camera? Too low to be on pole as this is taken from top of rise in road. Must only be one camera and I interpreted what I was told wrong as I was told about observing the brake lights. The guy in this deserves a ticket for sure, but for an orange light?

Orange also means stop too though, right? It's hard to say if he was in the wrong without seeing the footage.

sbiddle: I fired up my Nokia GPS the other week on my way home in a bus thinking we were travelling rather fast and managed to clock 71.9km/h in a 50km/h area!

I did that too, mine was doing 110ish in a 100km area (which they are only meant to do 90km/h IIRC)

Never knew about the left lane thing.
Going back to OP, I personally like when I catch a Taxi and they speed. It is usually at night so there are less people on the road, and it ends up being cheaper.
