Ive noticed more and more recently that the majority that i see speed.

Today driving home I was overtaken by 3-4 Taxi's when i was on the speed limit, they were doing at least 10k's over.

Coming back from a night on the town the other week the taxi driver taking us home was doing 70k's in a 50 zone.

Personally Ive had enough of it, took one of their number plates, going to ring there manager tomorrow.

Im going to do this for every taxi i see speeding from now on. Too many taxi drivers are disregarding the law, it all starts with "its only 10k's over".

Its not just taxi drivers too, about 30% of the traffic on my way home overtook me, some going 60 (in a 50 area) and others 70+.

I never really realised until now how out of hand it seems to be.

Anyone else notice this?

I can't really comment on my own driving, or comment on the public speeding as I normally drive between 50-60kmh (when safe to do so).

However, on the taxi driver front I must agree, my partner and I were being taken into town a couple of weeks ago and the taxi I was in was easily doing 65kmh at one point.

I fired up my Nokia GPS the other week on my way home in a bus thinking we were travelling rather fast and managed to clock 71.9km/h in a 50km/h area!

Fact is, both you and the taxi drivers are breaking the law.

This whole 'I only speed when it is safe to do so' is a bollocks excuse. If the speed limit is 50, then that is the maximum speed you can legally travel at. Not 10k's over. Not 10% over.

You are breaking the law to a slightly less degree than your taxi driver, but still breaking the law.

I'd rather taxi drivers did 10km/h over rather than the 10km/h under in the fast lane that I see all too often...

About taxi drivers... Most of the times when they have someone on board they go slow - like when you really want to get to the airport, they go on the motorway at 80k/h. Also most of the times when they are empty they go over the speed limit. Probably trying to quickly get back to the base to get more fares?

Corporate Cabs are the worst offenders.... Ive been naughty doing about 115 in a 100 zone and have a Corp Cab come up behind me and start tooting and flashing his lights etc to get out of the way - while he has fares in the car. I dont move... fudge them, they can wait.

So if Im doing 115 and hes come flying up behind me, whats he doing.....

You should be on the other lane regardless of speed anyway, unless passing. Were you passing? If so then the cab is wrong, if you were not passing, move over your big ego and to the left lane ;-P

I drive to the conditions and under or at the speed limit. Its not that hard really.

Lets hope that no small children ever wander on to a road when a driver is going 60 (or over) in a 50k zone.

50k zones are set for a reason. Normally in residential areas where small children might wander out, where cars are parked along the side and may open doors in your path, and where a dog may run out in front of you. You'll notice that 100k zones don't generally share these characteristics. Which is why they are 100k zones.

While someone opening a door, or a kid running out may not be your fault, the chances of serious injury or even death increase the faster you are going. No matter how awesome a driver you are or how great your car is, the speed you are going in the main deciding factor when it comes to someone surviving an accident.

Wait, why am I even explaining this - if you drive and don't know this, you really shouldn't be on the road.

A few years ago ("few"...) on the way home from an after party (ball season in HS) a mate and I were picked up by a BlueStar Taxi. He proudly told us that we were in an ex-cop car and would we like to see "how fast she can go". In a 50kph area he hit 170kph before finally slowing down... scared the **** out of us thats for sure! On the bright side he got lost doing this so he reset the metre.

I have to agree, some taxi drivers are incredibly aggressive with their driving and speed, passengers or not. Coming home down Memorial Ave in Chch late at night I am constantly overtaken by Taxi's heading with their fares into town from the airport. Mainland Taxi's are the worst of the worst IMHO. I know a lot of my mates vote with their feet and refuse to use certain local companies because of their driver behaviour (First Direct are the only firm me and the partner take).

As you say people do know this, people are also only human and have their driving flaws, I?m sure you have had a moment or two of inattention yourself, just like everyone else....complaining about it on an internet forum is going to achieve what exactly?
