sbiddle: Except the cards used on the ERG system (Mifare)?are pretty basic compared to the new Snapper cards and hardware. The new Snapper cards are seriously cool, 72kb JCOP! These cost significantly more to manufacture.

None of which the end user gives a crap about, its just a card. Its hard enough end users seeing the difference between memory cards with performance and capacities, trying to explain that there is more technology in a card to achieve the exact same purpose is not going to achieve anything.

I think what most people would want, is a bus card they can use instead of cash. Why would people care if it has 72kb JCOP? Most people including myself don't even know what that stands for! haha

Even better, why doesnt the government do it? Buy out snapper, implement it in most major cities/towns and pick up the initial cost of the cards and the terminals etc... (By saying that I assume snapper is privately owned?)

BETTER?! what the hell? That would be the worst thing possible to happen - Bad enough that you are creating an electronic log of where you go, but to have a govt department have that information - no way.

Plus you can guarantee it would go over budget, be late, and lack some features it was supposed to have.

Also, that would mean that the govt would get complained to if there was some service that wanted to accept them but was denied, like admission to R18 things etc, whereas a privately operated company are within their rights to deny.

The whole idea of the govt running something like this is so nuts I don't even think it would come out of a green party member.

I suggest you spend a little time researching what the NZTA are doing - because they are in effect funding smart ticketing nationwide, starting with Auckland.

When your card si smart enough to be able to run an app to emulate all the existing systems out there I think it is a big deal!
