redherring: Got a bill for $375 because:
1. IRD included an extra pay period (from this year) in their assessment.
2. That pushed my total income into a new tax bracket so I haven’t paid enough tax.
3. They’ve now overpaid my Working for Families because with a higher income I’m not entitled to as much.

Great work by the new system.

It seems the new system works only if you have an extremely simple tax situation - like PAYE and nothing else. If you also have interest and dividends it can’t handle it - particularly if those are in joint names.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Not sure about that - they seem to have calculated interest on joint accounts solely as income for the lowest earner, in our case anyway. I've got other accounts in my name only, that could have been an issue for the automated system if I was the higher earner.

I got a letter today telling me I get a $600 refund. My SO got a bill for $700 a couple of weeks ago. Damn - if I'd filed divorce papers a weeks ago...  only kidding.

We have interest from several sources - banks and bonds - plus dividends - and none of it has been picked up correctly - even though the payers would have provided IR with the info.

Slightly off topic, I posted a return a month ago (yes I know I should have done it online).  I have not had anything back, and last Thursday I've got an email reminder saying it's due tomorrow!! I've send an e-message raising this but they say it could take 21 days to respond.  Is it likely I'll be fined? Fortunately I did take copies so it won't be a big job to do it again.  It's an IR4.

You may need to show proof that it was mailed - probably unlikely that you sent it as registered mail. If it’s lost in the mail how can you prove you mailed it?
