So since I've had my MasterCard with ASB, I've been having occasional problems with using it. Sometimes the merchant will insert the card, then the machine tells them to swipe it, then insert, then swipe then it works again. This also happens on machines where I have to insert the card and such, gets quite annoying. I've already had the card replaced for this same issue not so long after I got it, but its still doing it since it was replaced and its just getting more annoying. Have I just been unlucky and gotten two dud cards? Or are any of you experiencing the same problem?

I've also just had my Visa Debit card replaced too, after finding out it the card number was being used overseas without my permission, so I can't really afford a second new card in 1 week. (I'm a student after all)

My VISA credit does it sometimes too. I blame the terminals.

I used to get this problem quite a bit with my ASB Visa card (chip enabled). I haven't found it to be much of a problem lately. The problem seemed to related to particular EFTPOS terminals, the older style ones didn't seem to cope so well with the chip cards. Most of the retailers have been replacing these slowly over time.

I get it sometimes with my ASB Visa, but it's getting less frequent. I think it's some readers aren't very good, and the issues are slowly being worked out by stores and eftpos suppliers.

I have westpac mastercard. I was in Dubai few weeks back and a few retailers could not process the payment for some unknown reason. I can however use my visa card on that same reader without issue... I wonder if this is an issue exclusive to mastercard only?

The only place I've ever had this kind of issue is Mobil. They had to swipe the card, insert the card, swipe the card, swipe it again, then insert it again.

BNZ tells me this means they're credit card fraudsters.

I've had the reverse problem (ASB Visa unable to be processed, Mastercard fine). My understanding is that it's an issue with the foreign bank not being able to process the payment - so it's always worth carrying both card types!

Have had a few of the insert - get told to swipe, then get told to insert it on the work machine with national bank visa cards. Most of the time its all good except for it being on dialup so sloooooooow.

+2 for problems with Mobil - insert, swipe, insert etc - the attendants seem to do it so quickly and nonchalantly that it's something they experience constantly.

I find the stuffing around with chip cards so utterly irritating I avoid using my Visa or Mastercards in any store where possible, I have a standard EFTPOS card I use instead to avoid having to use the irritating chip cards.

When I use chip cards I consistently end up removing at the wrong time causing the transaction to fail.

How hard is it to wait till it tells you to remove it.

IMO keep using the card but make sure you shame all the retailers with slow terminals, its under 2-3 seconds on a decent one. up to 15 or so on an old dialup junker.

How much longer are the networks going to tollerate machines on dialup connecting in? Surely that is where there should be an additional charge since it is using someones dialin pool somewhere that cant be getting maintained for any other reason.

I will admit on some terminals it isn't too much of a problem but considering I tend to frequent places with slow terminals It can really irritate me, Really I just see no reason why a payment system upgrade should take longer and require more thought.

I dont find it troublesome at all. You can clearly see the instruction when to remove the card.

Everyone should aim to be Whitcoulls. Even with a chip card, a transaction there is consistently 1-2 seconds total duration. Even the big supermarkets are slower.
