At last the Wellington City Council plans to stop taxis parking in pay and display areas.

How many times I tried (sas many others) to find a park in some areas to find out taxi drivers were using the spaces either without paying or paying one ticket and passing on to the next guy.

I quite often visit a site for work that's on The Terrace just up from the James Cook. There are around 10 or so parks between the motorway off ramp and Everton Terrace, and it's not uncommon to find these full of taxis waiting for jobs.

Unless the street view imagry has been updated lately there are from memory even 3 taxis parked there waiting when the street view car went past!

Part of the reason the WCC parking meters went to $1 minimum was to stop taxi drivers who just put in 20c to avoid being fined (different fines for no ticket vs expired ticket). it'd be good to see that reversed with this change, but I somehow doubt it'll happen!

It's dirt cheap compares to many other cities in the world. You can pay $30 an hour for parking in the Sydney CBD.

At the end of the day parking is a finite resource, therefore supply and demand rules apply.

On street parking is probably priced to discourage long term use, to make it easy for people to do their chores and buy what they need, not hog parks all day. If you want to park all day go to a long term car park, which are around $15/day, less with monthly contracts.
