I'm completing my 2012/13 tax return online...

"My IR3 tax return (2012/2013)"

I've reached the end of the return , and am owed a small refund.

So, there is a refund section.....

"Refund overpayment of 2014 provisional tax

Optional refund Amount
Would you like any overpayment of 2014 provisional tax refunded?*

Yes No
Amount of overpayment of 2014 provisional tax you want refunded"

Why on earth is it asking me about 2014 provisional tax during my 2013 return?

So, I've been trying to phone IRD to ask -- it takes 3 minutes to navigate their answering system, at which time it states 'no operators available' then disconnects me!!!!!!

This stuff really annoys me. They are incompetent on so many levels.

Agitation over :)

I just ignore questions I don't understand and let them work out how to return my refund.

Another agitation::::

The online IR10 does not want cents... but, I calculate everything using cents in excel.

So, my totals (including odd cents) does not match the total in the IR10 (without oddcents). It is just by a dollar or 2 so doesn't really matter but their system cannot cope with this.

Is this your first time?

Just use the same rounding as IRD (or whatever rounding is required to get the answers you need). Noone cares about the cents.

No , I always do it but this is the first time I complained :)

The problem is, that the odd cents round such that the IR10 totals do not match the IR3 totals (which include odd cents).   I guess the discrepancy could be used to trigger an audit but I think the IR10 is probably just collecting statistics as it seems to change a bit each year.

Actually, i just manually adjust the values so they do actually match but it is not strictly correct.

I know we are only talking about $1 or $2, but it does not match nonetheless and having done studied theoretical physics at university rounding and errors are a subject unto themselves.

Yup me too. As long as the final number is the same I dont think they care.

I round up down on the 50c ie <50c round down >= 50c round up. Seems to come out with the same "rounded number" as my calculation in excel.

You may be right, but in accounting/auditing we have a concept called materiality.

The IR10 is not used to assess your tax obligation, it is merely a statistical information form so it doesn't matter if the amounts don't match exactly (i.e. are out by several dollars)

Thanks for posting... according to the IRD site these are due at the end of the week but it didn't even cross my mind because they haven't posted the stuff to me this year! Did anyone else not get anything?

I think I got something in the mail last year saying to do it online -- which I was already doing anyway.

The online filing system is actually pretty good in general.

I got my IR3 form in the mail in May. So they do still send them out. Maybe it's because I have a tradition going of sending in the paper form.

How do you get anywhere when it logs you out every link you click on? Almost every link anyway... actually it's completely random. Somtimes can open the form, sometimes can get two or three pages in... Sometimes it opens a new tab, sometimes it does not. Messy.

I got a reminder by post to do it online. (I usually do mine online.)
