What kind of nonsense is this?!?

"The serial number on the computer might have slipped off the back, you know the sticky bit might have just come off," says Revenue Minister Peter Dunne.

Is there not a record of the people that were issued with these laptops?
Shouldn't they be held accountable?

This is a shocker all right. There's got to be at least $200k worth of computers missing!!!

Surely if the stickers had 'fallen off' or whatever, they could still count an item as being present or not (with or without asset ID/ sticker, whatever)). Surely their asset register would hold some key data such as PC make, model, SN...

I assume he means the asset number sticker - have you ever seen how firmly the serial number is stuck on a PC (so I get bored at work sometimes)? It's up there with those "super glue" price stickers you get at some CD stores.

My work (a rather large bank) has asset numbers on all our our equipment. However, the equipment is tracked by the serial numbers and MAC addresses instead. Someday, I'll work out the point of us having the asset numbers at all.
