I'm currently with ANZ that was with National Bank until they merged and thankfully kept the National Bank online banking.

Looking at moving banks (I'm thinking Kiwibank or ASB) to manage my families banking including our children and mortgage.

What is the view on if their online banking experience with their bank? Or are they all pretty much of a muchness??

I'm with kiwi bank and I like their online banking, it's easy to use and I don't have to jump through hurdles just to log in.

Still disappointed they haven't got NFC bank transfers yet.

Kiwibank is fine as long as there is no sudden rush of customers . Christmas is a good example, it took nearly an hour and a half to transfer money between accounts last  Xmas , Easter this year wasnt much better. in fact any public holiday it grinds to snail pace. Fustrating.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

The ASB website is very good but the Android/windows apps are superb in my view

I used to be with ANZ - when they merged the backend with national bank it went to crap.
You cant even have two usernames for different people to login anymore

Now I am with NZCU baywide for the business and personal.
Its good - so long as you can get around the fact they use member numbers instead of normal bank accounts.
So if you transfer money to another bank account number with NZCU it is overnight, but if you transfer it to their member number, its instant.

ANZ's was good with its 90's feel which it kept right up until ~2012

ANZ's online banking has taken huge steps forward in the last 12 months in terms of usability and functionality. They really seem to be investing time and money into improving and expanding their service and the Apps keep improving as well. The only other ones I've used are BNZ and Westpac and both just feel old and bland in comparison now. I can't say I've heard much in the positive about ASB's online presence and KiwBank's seems to be a mixed bag of people extolling its virtues or bemoaning its reliability.

We manage all our banking through ANZ (the wife and I) and other than the now compulsory 2 factor login (which the wife hates) its proved to be pretty easy (except for that one time the wife accidentally transferred a large sum of money out of savings using the quick transfer panel on the side which requires no confirmation...).

I guess it really comes down to what functions you need... We found that once we explained how we wanted our online banking to work ANZ were pretty good at adjusting access and info accordingly.

Another vote for kiwibank here, good internet banking, have apps for ios/android, can do everything over the internet or phone, only time i have had to stand in line at kiwibank was to put a new pin on a card.

What I find really good is that you can hide accounts in your internet banking and set up targets on accounts (i.e. holiday fund), they also put little reminders on your internet banking about holidays and if you have any payments due to go out on that holiday.

Was with bankdirect and moved over a couple of years ago.

I've only ever used ANZ's online banking, so have nothing else to compare it with. I guess it works.

I was very annoyed that they introduced 2FA with no warning. I had to get our personal banking contact to exclude me from that, as I need to be able to add casual payees if I'm paying for things thru Trademe.

I'm with Westpac and their online banking is ugly and pretty basic, but does everything I need it to do. iOS app is pretty good but not as many functions as the ASB app.

Might be a little more hassle with 2 factor authentication, but its important security. You can't trust just passwords and I would never go for an online bank that does not have it.

I know this isn't an option you're considering, but take a look at the BNZ YouMoney system. Very cool online banking system and their Android app is cool also (not seen the iPhone variant). Pretty sure there are demos on their website.

If you like to actually talk to someone face to face about your mortgage, kiwibank is not for you. Your only option is the callcentre.
Kiwibanks internet banking is OK, but I honestly prefer Westpac's.
I've had some terrible experiences with Kiwibank in general, but once again, it's mostly down to people. It's fair to say Kiwibank has more than it's fair share of incompetent people.

I had a conversation with a Westpac manager a while back when looking at mortgages. He said that if service was my primary need, ASB was their only real competition, if cost was the main factor they wouldn't be able to beat the likes of Kiwibank and ANZ.

We use ANZ, TSB and Westpac to varying degrees.

ANZ: These guys have been superb with customer support both through direct contact and online options.
I've used both the iOS and Android apps for ANZ banking and found them to be excellent, especially with the updates over time.
The website banking has improved out of sight since the early days.  I have multiple entitys linked to my login so can see personal, business, trust accounts, plus KiwiSaver.
I'm very happy with the service, support and product range made available to us via ANZ, I would recommend them to anyone and have banked with them for over 10 years now (initially National Bank - gave ANZ a fair chance at the changeover and from our perspective they rocked it, I understand it wasn't smooth for everyone at the time though)

TSB: Meh.  I'm looking to wind up our relationship with TSB sometime, but its mainly to do with wanting to cnosolidate some things and gain more immediate control over others.
I find their website clunky and slow with limited functionality compared to ANZ.
I've never been able to authenticate their mobile app despite carefully checking every detail upon entry - not a biggie because of how we use TSB, but annoying when I'm away from a computer and want to access account detail or arrange payment etc.  I put this down to me doing something wrong as surely it must work!  :-S

Westpac:  Only have a credit card with Westpac.  The online fucntionality available is sufficient for my needs (balance checks, hotpoints checks, keeping-an-eye-on-the-wifes-spending checks....).  I can't comment on app use as I've not bothered with it, nor on the full functionality of the website.  Overall satisfied with this though, I have banked with Westpac before and found them excellent, I only moved from them when I purchased my first house, their deal wasn't as good as National Bank, the decision made itself.

I've also banked with ASB in the past and if I was to change tomorrow, they would be top of the list to check out as I hear good things from a workmate who I have faith in.  I understand their online banking is pretty swish too - don't they have a try-before-you-buy demo site to play on?
I always found ASB great to deal with, hopefully thats not changed.  Move from ASB was prompted by the house purchase mentioned above.

TLDR: ANZ are excellent from my experience.  ASB apparently very good also but no recent direct experience.  TSB meh.  Westpac MOTR based on experience.  Go where works best for you, keep them all on their toes by telling them you're shopping around and checking that any points-of-difference are actually useful to your situation.

I'm with ASB, and even if I'm in front of the PC, I'll reach for the Windows Phone, and use their app.

ASB is fantastic for their online & mobile banking, imo, and their customer support if you do have an issue has been simply fantastic. Within the past two years I've also used BNZ, ANZ, Kiwibank and Westpac, and while some are good (notably BNZ & Kiwibank), I don't find them quite as good as ASB. Just a few features they are either missing, or they make too frustrating to use. That said, they mostly seem to be improving all the time (a year or two ago I'd have said avoid BNZ, their online services were terrible, but they're almost as good as ASB/Kiwibank now) so in another six months time things could be very different.

If it is useful for you, of those I've used, ASB is the only one I feel I can do everything through the mobile app if I choose to.

Of course, aside from their online banking, things like interest rates and fees should be considered.

I have only ever known the National Bank version, and I am glad it was kept when ANZ took over.
Love the app on the phone, though the new version is asking for too many permissions so I have stuck with the last version for now.

I didn't like 2FA being forced on, but it hasn't failed me when I needed to pay randoms via Trademe
