I think I read somewhere that paypal offers Visa Debit or similar to people based in the USA. I'd find that quite handy. Is there any way I can switch my account to be based in the US to get one that can be used in NZ? Alternately can I set up another account and transfer money to the other account to use?

I might need a US address for that. Will youshop send mail, or is there a better mail service that just scans and emails mail to you?

To get one I believe you need to provide a SSN which not not many people will have. Having a US address like youshop is only part of the solution. Paypal is renown for geo blocking/banning accounts that have been accessed from different regions.

Lastly I'd imagine spending US currency in NZ would be quite inefficient especially with Paypal conversation rates

Hit the Payoneer link at the bottom and open an account. You get a MC debit card and a BoA account number. You can then load the money from PayPal to that card as a bank withdraw. No fees from PayPal, 1% fee on loading from Payoneer.

Also US clients can pay directly to that account.

Been using it for a few months now.

Interesting option MF. Basically it allows you to get paid in the US/USD, transfer to a USD account based in the US, and spend that money anywhere in the world through a debit card? Any monthly fees or withdrawl fees or anything? Fees for using the card in NZ? I know there would be cash withdrawl fees.

Correct. Make sure you convert the currency on PayPal before withdraws ad US bank will only accept US currency and so on.

You might have to provide copy of id and utility bill when opening the account.

Think I edited my post while you were reply. Are there any monthly or per withdrawl fees?

$29.95 year fee but if you hit my link we both get $25 when you first hit $100 deposited.

There is a withdrawal fee when used on ATMs but I only use it on EFT POS.

Mag stripe card with PIN but I had a chip card sent to me on request, which strangely requires signature, not PIN. Go figure.

Found their fees, they're well hidden. US$30/year, $13 for a card, plus withdrawal fees.

Does this mean that when signing up you have to specify a US address? Or is the card that is sent default to US currency?

If you're talking about Payoneer, I signed up today and it's apparently posted a card to me at my NZ address. I think the card is in USD.

Would ApplePay work for the card then? Again not suggesting to be used for everyday transactions. Just to know if the Issuing Bank is indeed from the US (BoA)

No, BoA is not the issuing bank. They only have a routing accounting with BoA.

Issuing bank is Choice Bank in Belize.  Yes, this does mean some USD transactions may slug you with a Cross-Border Transaction Fee.  Also, be aware that any merchant that checks BIN to establish whether the card is US issued will correctly detect it as not a US card.
