Hey folks... I have been quietly working with Snapper on a couple of projects and one of them is the just announced Snapper in Semble.

Semble is a secure mobile wallet used to pay for things using a digital version of your ASB or BNZ credit or debit cards stored in your compatible Android smartphone equipped with a Semble-ready SIM card. There is a long discussion about Semble here.

Snapper in Semble means people will be able to conveniently and quickly pay for transport (buses, cable car, taxis and parking) using their smartphone, as well as use the same device instead of their credit/debit cards wherever the PayPass or payWave logos are displayed in stores. This also means users on any New Zealand mobile operator can now have Snapper in their compatible smartphones - something that was limited to 2degrees Touch2Pay users until now.

The Snapper team is running a free event in Wellington, 14th July 6pm - 8pm to showcase this development. You're invited to join and find out how this works and how you too can start using Snapper in Semble now. Miki Szikszai (Snapper CEO) and Rob Ellis (Semble CEO) will say some quick words (we promise) while specialists from 2degrees, Spark and Vodafone will be on hand to answer questions - and even help you move to a Semble-ready SIM card on the spot.

So when you hop on the bus and use Semble to tag on, will you have to open the app and select the card or can it work even if the phone is off?

Or does it need to have "always on" selected in order for this to work?

Short answer: No, you don't need to do anything.

Long answer: the readers look specifically for Snapper codes only. Even if you have a credit card in your Semble wallet, and even if this credit card is Always On (meaning it is the default for transactions), only the Snapper card will be activated. No need to turn phone on or off.

What is the advantage of using the Semble app here? My phone is unsupported by Semble, but the Snapper app created a card for me that I can happily use.

I could put my sim into a supported phone and create the Snapper card then move the sim back to my phone. Would I see any advantage in doing this?

No advantage with the Snapper, you basically have the same setup as Snapper has had on 2degrees Touch2Pay SIM for the last couple of years.

The only advantage would be if you wanted to put an 'always-on' credit card on the same SIM for use in the unsupported phone.

I had an existing Semble sim for the last few months working fine on my Note 3, i had also registered this in the snapper app, now i am unable to add Snapper in Semble as i get the error Status 99 You already have snapper on your sim.
I would prefer to have all my cards in Semble rather than having the sim registered in the Snapper App and Credit cards etc in Semble, i figured i may as well have them all in the same place.
Following the guide on the 2degrees site - http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/touch2pay it seems i should be able to switch to semble from using the previous touch2pay implementation on the semble sim. I have transferred the credit from my sim and removed the card from my account but i still receive the same message in Semble.

The 2degrees Semble SIM is a bit different from the Spark and Vodafone as it comes with a small config setting already loaded - to make it compatible with existing Touch2Pay service.

The Snapper app will automatically create a new Snapper card outside Semble.

It will work exactly the same for payments, transport, etc but you are not able to turn it off via the Semble app.

If you want to have the Snapper card in Semble then you need a new Semble SIM.

Make sure the Snapper card is registered against your Snapper account and write down the card number (to get the balance transferred later)
Uninstall Snapper mobile app
Swap the SIM cards and transfer the mobile number over
Make sure the SIM works for voice, etc
Start the Semble app and proceed creating a new Snapper card in Semble
After changing the configuration as required Semble will direct you to download the Snapper app
After you load the Snapper app and create the card make sure it is associated to your Snapper account
Make sure the Snapper card is now in Semble
Contact Snapper with the old card number and ask for a token with the old balance
Using the Snapper mobile app apply the token to the new card

Curiously this isn't compatible with the Xperia Z2 but is with the Z1. I wonder what separates compatibility of snapper vs general semble usage.

In the 2degrees case it may seem like that but really it starts getting better when using Semble with other credit cards (ASB and BNZ) and in the future with loyalty programs.

I was initially interested, but thought it looked more appropriate for people who are new to Semble/Snapper, or trying to figure out why they would want it, rather than people who are using it already (I did my first Snapper in Semble bus trip yesterday morning). Am I wrong - would there still be some interest for us "early adopters"?

I was quite interested to come along and see what has changed in the last three years, but unfortunately by employer uses Digital Island as the phone provider which is not in the scheme. Shame really as this would be very useful to me as a very casual bus user as it saves having to constantly carry around another card (I already use beep n go on my S4 which is great).

Procrastination eventually pays off.
