I'm ok a UK passport, so I'm not exempt from the recently visa requirements to Australia. But try as I might, I can't seem to get an answer out of anyone there if I need to go to Queenstown to get bio-metrics done for just a transit visa.

Because international flights I'm looking at connect in Australia. I'm just going through and collecting my luggage then checking in for the next flight, but that requires a transit visa.

I've tried calling the Auckland center and they couldn't tell me, they said they'd email information but never did. I emailed them and got two links back (neither of which worked anymore, lol!) and no answer to my particular question.

So I thought I'd post on here in case anyone else has run across the same problem :) Cheers!!

------------------------------------------

From 29 September 2015, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection will commence collecting biometrics from clients applying for Australian visas in New Zealand.

Most clients lodging a visa application for Australia in New Zealand will need to attend an Australian Visa Application Centre (AVAC) in person to provide biometrics unless they are excluded or exempted from the Programme. New Zealand citizens are excluded from providing biometrics.

Visa applicants in New Zealand who submit their applications at the AVAC in Auckland or Queenstown will be asked to provide their biometrics at the same time. A new AVAC will open in Queenstown on 29 September 2015 to provide services to clients who live on the South Island.

Visa applicants who mail their applications to the AVAC will be sent a letter requiring them to attend one of the AVACs to provide their biometrics.

Visa applicants who apply for online visas may need to provide their biometrics. If so, they will be sent an electronic request letter requiring them to provide their biometrics at the AVAC.

The AVAC will charge a service fee for application submission and collection of biometrics. Please see the Service Delivery Partner (SDP) website below for more details.

Details of the AVACs in New Zealand are as follows:

Auckland
Australia Visa Application Centre
Level 1, West Plaza Building
1-3 Albert Street
Auckland CBD

Opening hours: 8:30am – 4:30pm
Monday – Friday

Queenstown
Australian Visa Application Centre
Level 3, Forsyth Barr House
57 Shotover Street
Queenstown 9300

Opening hours: 8:30am – 4:30pm
Monday – Friday

Submitting a complete visa application with all required supporting documentation at an AVAC, and providing your biometrics at the same time, is the quickest and most efficient way to lodge a visa application in New Zealand."

It probably depends. If you are clearing immigration (i.e. leaving the international airside, then going to the check-in area) then you will probably need it. If you are not clearing immigration (i.e. you have a boarding pass all the way and can just go through the international flights connection door) then you probably won't need it.

But safest bet would be to call the AVAC in Auckland or Queenstown (if they even give information over the phone).

You don't need to apply for the visa

https://www.border.gov.au/Lega/Lega/Form/Immi-FAQs/do-i-need-a-visa-to-transit-through-australia

The following categories of travellers are eligible to transit through Australia without applying for a visa:

  • Citizens of the following countries:
... United Kingdom (including its colonies), ....

So if you have a UK passport, you're golden.

What?

My Wife has a UK Passport (Citizen) and has NZ Permanent Resident. Every Time she goes it takes 2 mins to get a evisitor visa (665) no cost) as  on https://border.gov.au. Even for a Transit Visa there it is simple.

I cannot find anywhere about the information above you have given on the AU website.

For a Transit Visa (771) looks like its free/easy as well.

Do people have to physically go and talk to someone now before they they a VISA? She can't just applt for a 665 tonight and go to AU tomorrow morning?

Without knowing your exact details it's hard to comment but I'm not sure why you automatically think you'll end up landside in Sydney and having to recheck in again rather than simply having bags through checked (which can happen under many circumstances even if you're on different airlines) and stopping at the international transfer desk which is airside.

Thanks for the replies!

I'll certainly double check on if I need the visa or not. I remember going to board an Air NZ flight and not being able to check in because I didn't have a visa for Australia. They got me an e-visa on the spot, phew.

I'd be looking at Jetstar, which sadly don't check bags through.
