Hi Team

So it seems I am getting asked by random people if I have any spare change and

it seems to be quite often 3 or 4 years ago it didn't seem to happen now it's all the time

I can't sit in peace  anymore and listen to my music while eating a pizza without someone trying to talk to me and I know when I take out my earphones

they are just going to ask for money. Does anyone know why this is happening more now these day's? I feel like saying Winz is just around the corner. It's not job to fed or give money to these people. there's also the auckland city mission.

If they're asking for money, I always say no. If they're that hard up for cash, they should go see WINZ or stop spending their WINZ money on crap. Was an article recently somewhere I read, about so called "homeless" people asking for money in Hastings I think, and turns out 70% of them had a home to go to and in some cases had part time jobs, they were just out for easy money.

Why is it happening ? 9/10 Pure laziness and greed IMO.

When I was on a benefit years ago, I learnt very quickly that you had to have control over what you spent the money on, or found yourself short changed very quickly.

Yeah but asking random people on the street would be quite degrading your saying a lot of them will have a job and a home?

Love it how you also get people sitting at tables in malls (A certain colour cross comes to mind) and they'll walk over to you and start trying to tell some fake life story and ask you to give everything you have to them. Ahh, What fun I have with those people and how much they hate coming across me..

Regarding the ___ Cross:

I just say: "NO - I won't give you any money to pay for you to provide vehicles and time for employees to do the daily School Run, thanks!"

Ditto: Ignore. Ignore. Ignore.

I've also seen almost all of the vagrants I regularly walk past in Welly get nasty toward some by-passer at one time or another and I've been on the receiving end myself a couple of times. I generally give all of them a wide berth and keep my eyes straight ahead.

You know those "charities" that have volunteers who shake buckets with money in them and approach you telling you to give your Hard Earnt money to their overpaid CEO. I mean starving children in Africa? Yeah, Those ones.

I will just tell them bluntly that if I had spare money I'd put it into my savings so I am not relying on a charity later in life. Have had a few challenge me on that and call me rude or bad person but then I remind them that they approached me asking me to give away my hard earnt money away and that is rude.

I generally avoid places where that is likely to arise. I was asked about 20 times whilst walking down Queen Street a while back. I generally try and avoid walking too close to them. Same with chuggers.

I have had this with kids outside the mall asking for money for the bus. It doesn't make sense, because if they needed it for that purpose, why dont' they ask the bus driver if they can have a trip and pay it back later. I would hope a bus driver wouldn't refuse, due tor safety reasons, and public transport is heavily subsidized anyway. But we wouldn't have ever gone up to strangers begging for money as kids in the 80's and 90's, so not sure why it is occurring more with this generation.

I have also recently seen someone in the street of a small town, with a sign saying they have lost their job and have no money and no home. The first time I have ever seen this in such an area. I wonder if it is due to the growth of these give a little type websites where people think it is now socially acceptable to ask strangers for money? It is not a direction I like to see NZ heading, as we should have adequate social welfare to look after people that fall on hard times, and this is what I pay my taxes for. Shouldn't WINZ  be managing this?

Often if you are going a small distance the driver will give you a free ride. When I had no money on my Hop Card the driver just let me get on.
