"Online Services is not available at the moment. Normal service will be restored shortly. We apologise for any inconvenience."

Is this a new thing, or have they been down for some time?

I just noticed this too and IIRC same thing happened about this time last year.

I'm pretty sure they want to tell me they're going to put my charitable donations refund in my bank tonight - so I guess they've told a whole bunch of people who are all trying to check.

I noticed this too. I also noticed a blurb on the front page saying "New MyIR Services Are Here", which leads me to believe it's an error with the new system.....

It's been spotty all day for me.

I don't know about other tax types, but IRD effectively create a rush with personal tax returns. They only supply the summary of earnings in late May, and the deadline for non-agent filed IR3 is early July. For many people (e.g. salary/wage earner with rental property that does their own tax) they only have the month of June to do it all.

IRD also has a txt campaign encouraging folk to confirm their PTS online instead of using a refund agent, so that's probably driving demand too.

Has anyone else been having trouble with submitting a GST return over the last few days? It is due tomorrow, but over the last few days the website just keeps crashing and saying it wasn't able to connect. In the end IRD get it submitted at about 1am this morning, and at a guess I suspect it is overloaded. I wish I could still do them on a paper return, as far easier.

It wouldn't be so bad if they had something on their website about the problems, and also extended the date until they had it  fixed. Or maybe they just expect people to say up all night trying to get it submitted. But it does seem to work at 1am if anyone else is having trouble. Maybe they should go back to their old online system, which was essentially just a website contact form with some scripting in it to calculate the gst. IMO the process was a lot better.

You can do, I reverted back to the paper versions for GST and PAYE because of the hassles with the IRD website.

Filing GST yesterday took about 5 attempts. Multiple timeouts, refreshes, unstyled pages etc etc but got there in the end.

Feel your pain, same experience here. But got there in the end. But feel for accountants if they have to do multiple ones in a short period.

Inland revenue is not accountable and cannot go broke as they are tax payer funded.

Their online systems are pretty awful... making things worse is that they can impose huge penalties if you fail to meet obligations because of their poor systems.

Politicians should be ensuring the people responsible are gone...probably that might be the guy running IRD, for taking such a casual approach to IT.

In a private organisation such things are handled by the board, government run departments see to operate in some bubble of protection.

It will be interesting to see how their big transformation project is going. I've heard varying statements on that.

And it is now known it was due to a load balancer and a telco provider.

IRD claims that only GST services are affected, but that's not true. I have been unable to use MyIR to file my IR3 for over a month now. A recent article on Stuff tells me I am not alone. Today the Minister responsible denied there were any problems, and a couple of days ago I got an email from the IRD director reminding me to submit my tax return without any hint that anything was wrong, or whiff of apology for the current fiasco. Ironically it arrived while I was on the phone to IRD complaining about how I couldn't submit my return because their website was down.

I wouldn't mind except they can fine me for their incompetence (in addition to me paying their salary for being incompetent).

Anyway, it's nice to know it wasn't their fault (not that there was a fault, of course).
