I never heard of this. Banks have prepaid debit cards available. Is that the same thing?

If the IRD have rung you claiming that you owe tax and the only way to avoid prosecution is to send a card this is a scam, don't do it.

I assume the OP is talking about Prezzy Card which is the only prepaid card that I'm aware of currently sold in NZ.

You can buy card and top up anything up to $1000 at a Post Shop. At retailers they're only available in fixed amounts.

There are some pretty strict rules around AML regulations that need to be complied with so you won't get anything above $1000

The scam, which has been targetting people around the country, alleges people owe money to the IRD and would be arrested if they don't pay up.

"In which case I can pay the bill. But they can't accept payment over the phone as that is not safe, but do I have a supermarket down the road?

If you get a Prezzy card, and use all or most of the balance, can you top it up over and over? Or is it a one off card.

Edit. spellcheck called it a Pretty card (probably is as well...)

The poster appears to not be of English decent, so may not use a US keyboard.
Don't see the need to hide +ban.

Agreed. I use a Japanese keyboard layout at times for work, and if I haven't toggled the locale correctly, various Unicode versions of familiar characters will pop up. This happens multiple times a week, nothing nefarious about it.
