Haha, my goodness, if these people have enough time to compose such a long e-mail, they should have enough time to find themselves a proper job!

Unfortunately, people still can fall for such scams.  Last year, I think, I saw a doco where a woman was fooled into the deal and lost thousands.  She even had the opportunity to meet the person who wrote the e-mail in New Zealand.  Freaky stuff.

Reminds of 80's when I received a number of the infamous Nigerian letters.  I read the first one I got, burst out laughing then threw it in the bin.  The next few didn't even get read.  Interestingly enough a few years later, in a similar vein to what heavenly_wild describes, there was a doco on TV featuring a number of Kiwi's that had been suckered in.

One of them was a computer consultant I knew, which surprised the heck out of me.  Takes all sorts I suppose.

I got a scam email of a different sort the other week, advising that the servers of my bank were being updated and requesting that I go to a particular site and update all my details.  Yeah right.

But to answer your question: Yes, after more than 20 years of similar scamming, people still fall for this rubbish.

I wonder if the scammers & victims have websites like this one.
www.SCAMZONE.ORG - because you know they are organised.
www.SuckerMoreThanOnce.Com - for those who are fooled more than once.

I sometimes get those emails forwarded onto me from my clients asking me what they should do about it.  After I recover from the amusement factor I then advise them about the scam & how it works.  Still, sometimes they ask more than once. =/

I was most surprised this morning to find a scammer/spammer using a Geekzone account to spam.....

<insert nasty expletive here>

I'd be tempted for some scambaiting, but frankly I haven't the wit or talent.....

(The culprit's florakonnh if ya feel like deleting someone......or florakonn@yahoo.com if ya feel like scambaiting....)

To make it clear, it was a PM spam, not an email spam. In the past we stopped this kind of things by blocking PMs from people located in some countries, but we can't block everything.

Oh, absolutely.  The frustrating thing is there's no 100% foolproof way of avoiding this crap, and I know forum moderators and owners have a helluva job at times with keeping on top of the spammers before they ruin a discussion board.

I do still find it astounding that scammers would even bother with a message board aimed at a technically & socially aware userbase.

What is more disturbing is a scam uncovered  by my other half and some of her workmates.
One of them had been flat hunting and found a nice apartment for a good rent.  Legit address.
Unfortunately it appears to be a scam.
Nigerian origin.  Significant other actually called the guy in Nigeria to get more info, so he does actually exist.
But the tennancy agreement breaks a number of NZ Tennancy laws, not to mention lacking in info.  Currently the "lease Agreement" appears to cover the entire building (apartment block) for $180 per week.
So, they are having a bit of fun at his expense while collecting info on him to forward to authorities.

So, be careful.  And as usual, if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.
