I actually do have a CC but I object to having it stored on Apple's servers.

Can I create an account without a CC?

Or can I get it (actually) deleted from the account after creating it?

Unfortunately my card isn't up for expiry in the very near future or else I'd just do it and not update.

You can also create an account with a gift card code, or if someone gifts a song to you.
Unfortunately, buying a gift card means that you'll be sending Apple your info, too.

You could always just use a prepaid credit card - NZ Post have two options available.

Hi, what information are we talking about?

So will a "song gift" allow me to create a full account and be eligible to download the free songs they give away intermittently?

I might look to pay someone $2 for a song (PM if you'd be happy to do it).

Does the gift song need to be a specific song or can it be "any one song"?

Gift cards aren't available for purchase at traditional bricks & mortar stores in NZ are they? Anybody know why?

I did hear a trick about buying a free iPhone/iPod application that meant you could get around the credit card thing, not sure how you can do that though and if it only applies to certain free Apps.

Like already stated you can buy a prepay credit card from the post shop, prezzy card - http://www.nzpost.co.nz/Cultures/en-NZ/ProductsAndServices/P/PrezzyCard/AboutPrezzyCard.htm

At a transaction cost of about $5 and I have a credit card already so this would be of little use otherwise to me.

At a transaction cost of $5, you would be safe knowing that "Apple don't have your details".

I was aware of the prezzy card, but as I'm not going to be spending much (if any), effectively I'm paying the minimum top up ($20 I think?) plus the $5 transaction fee just for the account.

From the information in this thread it would seem I can achieve the same with $1.79 and get a "free song" in the process?

You could, but then you'd be paying for that "free song" with the $1.79, wouldn't you.

The prezzy card would let you have $20 of iTunes store credit, too (enough for an album and a couple of songs, if split carefully).

As do I.

I know my credit card details are safer with Apple, on a secure server, than with half the shops that I've used it at.

I made one the other day without a credit card, It also let me make a USA account without a credit card ;) (mmm access to free US AppStore)

You do how ever have to find a redeemable coupon code, I used one from Here to get my US account - but this code no longer works.

Once you have a valid free code, the sign up process will let you select none as payment option.. but you still have to provide details for Name/Address etc..

Perhaps try googling for a code

Of course I'd be paying for the song!

But paying $1.79 to get an account with a "free included song", is better than $5 service charge to a pre-paid VISA (which doesn't get me any songs, just a card I don't have other use for), with a minimum topup for $20.

Thanks for the code suggestion, I'm unfortunately a couple of months too late to get a Nestle Chocolate bar free song code.

Awesome mate! It worked. Thanks!!

Bascially I tried to redeem that code which prompted me to sign in with my existing AppleID. It had a new payment option "none" which I chose and it accepted my registration but then gave an error saying that the code was for the wrong country. But my account is now activated!

I couldn't create a US account though - I presume IP locking? How did you get a US account? And what's the difference between our App store and theirs?
